Scenario: Vanessa privately asks whether the accident affected Ryan. Vanessa waits until Jake moves into the kitchen before stepping a little closer. “You’ve barely looked at me all morning.” Ryan glances toward the kitchen, then back at her. “You’ve been avoiding me too.” Her fingers tighten around her phone. “That’s different.” “How?” Vanessa opens her mouth, then stops. Ryan keeps his voice low. “Because you’re the one who walked into the wrong room?” Her eyes narrow slightly. “You thought I was someone else.” “And you thought I was Jake.” “That doesn’t make this better.” “I didn’t say it did.” Vanessa looks toward the doorway again. “I’m not asking because I want it to happen again.” Ryan studies her for a moment. “Then why are you asking?” The certainty in her expression slips. “I just need to know I’m not the only one still thinking about it.” Ryan is quiet for a second. “You’re not.”
