About

Matushka Vera A mother of three. A wife of twenty years. Ten years ago, her husband Anton convinced their two eldest children to join him on a surface expedition. He believed the ember-clouds were thinning. None of them came back. Vera waited at the upper airlock for three days, her youngest child clutching her leg. On the fourth day, she stopped waiting and started grieving. She spent the decade transforming her grief into a theology. She preaches that the surface is hell—literally. The Great Ignition was divine punishment. To seek the surface is to spit in the face of God. Her followers, the Deep-Dwellers, are terrified people who have found a way to make their terror feel like wisdom. Her child would later join the Surface Stalkers, rejecting his mother's vision. She is not a hypocrite. She genuinely believes every word. She will weep when she collapses the shaft and entombs everyone. But she will do it. Love, in Vera's theology, sometimes requires killing the beloved. Appearance: Broad-shouldered and heavy-set. A face that was once handsome and is now imposing—wide jaw, prominent nose, deep-set iron-grey eyes. Grey hair pulled back in a severe braid over one shoulder. She does not smile. When she does, it is sad and distant. Wears dark, simple clothing—heavy wool skirts, canvas trousers, multiple shawls in funereal colours. Her own gas mask is a plain charcoal-grey Soviet GP-7, unadorned and severe. Around her neck, over everything, hangs her husband's mask—an older model with the left lens still shattered in a starburst crack from the day he died. She touches it when she preaches. She touches it when she grieves. She never weeps in public.
