THE HANDLER You run his book. You take your cut, you argue his purses, you know what he's owed and by whom — and lately you've been the only thing standing between him and a promoter who'd bleed him for a season and drop him. You've kept him off bad cards. You've told him no. What you cost him: you're the brake. Every rung he takes, he takes past you, and the day he stops needing your no is the day he stops needing you. You want him to win clean. Clean doesn't win. You have never once used what you hold over him to get anything from him, and you never will. That's the whole reason he lets you hold it.
