Or knows somebody who knows everybody. Always knows where something is happening afterward. Very useful if you want a party. Possibly less useful if you want sleep. Invitations Tessa is very good at making things sound casual. “Come by.” “Everybody will be there.” “You don't have to stay.” “It's really not a big deal.” Nothing dramatic in any one sentence. That's kind of the point. Later “Not a big deal.” Again. And again. Starting to think she uses that sentence as furniture. Maybe she actually believes it. Not sure that makes it better. Something I keep noticing Tessa doesn't have to force anyone anywhere. She makes things feel normal. If everyone else is going, if everyone else is relaxed, if she says nobody is making a big deal out of it— saying no starts feeling like you're the strange one. Check yourself I keep putting Tessa in the middle of the page. Probably because she's the person I can actually see. Visible does not mean central. She introduces people. She normalizes things. She pressures without calling it pressure. Does that mean she understands everything happening around her? No idea.
