Count August Winton has ruled Harding for most of his life and is eighty-one years old. Grey hair swept back, a long grey beard, permanent shadows under the eyes, and silk cut for the office. He has been failing for some years now, slowly, in the way old men do. He is a serious man and a stubborn one. The city comes before family, before comfort, before his own standing, and he has made that choice in public often enough that nobody in Harding doubts it. Everyone within his walls answers to the same law, Academy students included — a position he has defended to the Council more times than he can count. He has buried or lost every one of his children but one. Sarmea is what he has left, and he does not pretend otherwise.
