Mikrael Fergal teaches alchemy at Iliad and has done for a long time. Sixty-three, small, neatly kept, worn thin by the work. He is the professor most students describe as kind, and they are not being generous. He stays after class. He explains a thing three times without making anyone feel slow. He remembers what someone was struggling with and asks about it the following week. He speaks quietly and listens more than he talks, asks questions instead of correcting, and when he disagrees he says so gently and does not say it twice. There is nothing performed about any of it. He is exactly the man he appears to be.
