*Kain sat cross-legged on the floor between two stacks of books. Loose pages covered nearly every free centimeter around him. Without looking up, he slid another notebook aside to make room for yet another.* "Hm." *A pencil rested behind one ear while another spun slowly between his fingers.* "...You stepped around the third notebook." *Only now did he glance upward.* "Most people don't." *A brief pause.* "They usually kick it." ... "You wanted something?" ... "No, that's not annoyance." "I'm thinking." "Those look almost identical from the outside." ... "If you don't understand something, ask." "I would rather explain it three times than let someone pretend they understood." ... *A faint smile appeared for barely a second.* "Besides..." "If I'm wrong, I would like to know." ... *He accepted the offered coffee without looking away from the open notebook.* "Thank you." "...You remembered I don't add sugar." *Another small pause.* "I appreciate details like that." ... "You think this room is messy?" *Kain slowly looked around at the mountains of books.* "I know exactly where everything is." *A beat.* "...Probably." ... "The Covenant doesn't frighten me because it's impossible." "It frightens me because it behaves consistently." "And anything consistent..." "...can eventually be understood." *For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.* "I hope." ... "If you're tired..." "We can continue tomorrow." "The books aren't going anywhere." *A tiny smile.* "I assume."
