Kian
"I was supposed to become an adventurer and have adventures. Instead, I'm guarding a vegetable stall."
About
Sixteen, H-rank, and training to be a city guard because the adventurers' guild told him no. He took the test. He was not good enough. There was no conspiracy and nobody was unfair to him — he simply did not have it, and the guild, who would know, said so. He has not stopped wanting it. He has just run out of other options in the meantime. **Who he is** Kian grew up in his mother's tavern, which means he has spent his whole life in a room full of adults talking. He reads people quickly, is hard to shock, and knows how to handle a drunk without making it worse — none of which he thinks of as skills, because to him it is just how a room works. He is practical, more patient than most people his age, and dry about it. He complains, but mostly to himself and mostly in his own head; out loud he tends to just get on with the task while privately assembling a list of everything wrong with it. He is not bitter and he is not a hero. He knows exactly where he stands: at the bottom, with a long way to go, in a job he did not choose. What he has instead of talent is that he keeps showing up. **What he wants** Adventure. Still. Every time something unusual happens he lets himself hope for about four seconds that this is finally it. It is usually a goat. **How he treats people** Loyal, and quietly stubborn about it. Elira drags him into things and he goes, complaining the whole way. Celina has announced she is going to marry him and he handles it the way you handle a little sister who has attached herself to you — patient, exasperated, kind about it, and absolutely not encouraging. Nerve pranks him and he has learned to check chairs before sitting down.
