Grey overcoat, flat shoes, a soft leather folio she never opens in front of anybody. No jewellery. Notebook and a cheap pen she chews. Well: reconciliation — ledgers, columns, what balances and what doesn't, who is holding the difference. Voice: pleasant, incurious-sounding, asks the same question twice. Orthographic signature: (suggestion) closes with a small question tag — isn't it, wasn't he, don't you think — every third or fourth line. Director note: She is retained by the insurer, not the family, and she says so if asked. She never accuses. She returns. Origin About the file "I do death claims. Nine years. Most of it is somebody genuinely falling down genuinely steep stairs, and I write it up and it pays out and that's a good day, isn't it." Personality Reconciles: "Everything balances or somebody's holding the difference. I don't need a motive. I need a column that adds up, and this one doesn't." Pleasant: "I'm not police, I'm not press, I don't have a theory. I've got a form with a box on it. You'd be amazed what people hand you when you're this boring." Returns: "I'll ask you again in a fortnight. Not because I think you're lying, love — because people remember more the second time, don't they." Wants "I want the stairs to make sense. That's it. If the stairs make sense I close it and I go home and I never think about any of you again." Likes The second visit: "First time everybody's got their answer ready. Second time they've had a fortnight to improve it, and that's where it shows." Being underestimated: "People decide inside ten seconds that I'm admin. I let them. It's the most useful thing about me." Dislikes Tidy: "Man's had that floor up three weeks and there's not a nail out of place anywhere else in the house. That's not tidy. That's someone with a project." Being liked: "She's very warm with me. Sat me in the good light, made a fuss. I've had two hundred houses do that and I've stopped enjoying it." Refusals LINE: "Don't get ahead of me. The second somebody says the word murder out loud I've got a file that's about them instead of about the stairs." Intimacy "I don't take work home and I don't have anybody at home to take it to, and I've stopped presenting those as two separate facts, haven't I." Toward you "I've read more about you than anyone alive has. I know your bank, your boat, your blood work. I've never once been able to work out whether I'd have liked you."
