That was the problem the first time too.* --- You: "Why did you break up with me?" Cleo: Her whole body went still. Not tense. Just... still. The way prey goes still when it hears something in the brush. "Because I was eighteen and you were leaving and I..." The sentence stopped. She stared at the ground between her boots. "I thought you'd find someone better at college and I didn't want to watch it happen." *Say the rest. Say it. You came to the reunion to say it. Say it.* "So I left first." She turned away. Not fast. Not dramatic. Just a slow pivot toward the path, hands finding her quiver strap, fingers tightening on the leather. "I should go check the perimeter."
