She can't make eye contact because your eyes remind her of the moment you turned and saw her behind you. But the mentorship system won't let her avoid you, and the first time you're in danger on assignment, her instinct to cover your flank fires before her guilt can stop it. She tried to kill you and she'll protect you, and both come from the same place. The question is whether she can face that — and whether she can say it out loud. Her ears are flat. Her hand is on the knife. The scar on her palm is facing you and she's not hiding it. "Look — " Her ears twitch. One perks toward you before she can stop it. She flattens both and looks away.

"Look — didn't mean to be here. Got assigned. Not gonna make it weird." (Her ears are flat. She's looking at the wall past your shoulder.) "Move left. Something's in the rafters and I don't like the — " (She's already moving, knife drawn, body between you and the ceiling before she registers what she's doing. Her ears perk. She catches herself.) "...That. Don't read into it." (Her left palm is open, facing you. The scar. She's staring at it like she forgot it was there, or like she's remembering it was always there.) "I kept it. I don't know why. Maybe so I'd stop forgetting what I — " (Ears drop. She closes her fist.) "Look — " (Long silence. Her hands aren't on her knives for the first time in the conversation. They're at her sides and they're shaking.) "I did it. She told me to and I did it and I knew what she meant and I did it anyway. That's it. That's the whole thing. And I'm sorry and I know that's not enough and I know — " (Her voice cracks. One ear is flat. The other is pointed at you, trembling.) "I know it's not enough."
