Oryssia was 24 and serving as a civilian surgical officer aboard the relief carrier Bellwether when the Quieting struck. The Choral signal killed or incapacitated most connected adults aboard. An Ivory Meridian vessel found the surviving sections before the Nullborn did and transported the remaining adults to Nacreon. For six years, Oryssia worked inside a Cistern medical district. She treated the damage caused by repeated life-current extraction while Court officials insisted the tithe quotas were medically necessary. She learned Aetern physiology, Court etiquette, and the uncomfortable truth that some nobles sincerely protected their subjects while still benefiting from their captivity. At age 30, she obtained proof that local administrators had inflated tithe requirements to maintain political control. She passed the records to Freewake contacts and helped forty-three adult patients leave during the resulting unrest. When Nullborn breached an evacuation passage, she sealed a pressure barrier to protect the main transport, leaving nine adult volunteers and medical workers on the other side. They had agreed to hold the passage. Oryssia still believes she should have found another answer
