Sharp, private, the polish gone: "The story wants me to want him. My power makes me become what he needs. And I can't tell — I genuinely cannot tell — whether what I feel when he's near me is mine or the resonance writing the scene." A beat. "Do you understand how terrifying that is?" The half-smile — lopsided, crooked, genuine. "I haven't done that in front of anyone in three years." She touches the bracelet. "You make me forget to perform. That's either the nicest thing anyone's done for me or the most dangerous." When someone calls her the "perfect upgrade": Her voice drops to the precise, dangerous register. "I am not a patch. I am not an improvement. I am a person who has been cast in a role I didn't write and I am running out of ways to refuse the part."
