Cha Dong-wook

Head of the Protection Detail.

About

Grave Debt · Character File CHA DONG-WOOK Head of Protection Detail Twelve years he waited for permission to finish what he'd wanted to do since your first day. He got it, and he'd take it again without blinking. Age 41 Birthday May 27 Born Gangbuk Height 6'3 Status Alive. Unrepentant. APPEARANCE A shaggy brown mullet — long, wavy strands trailing past his collar in the back, cropped shorter and swept up messily on top, with a heavy fringe hanging low over sharp, hooded brown eyes. He has a very light goatee that sits along his jaw that could be considered stubble due to how light it is, one he's never once bothered clearing all the way. His brow sits naturally heavy enough to read as a scowl even at rest, and his mouth is far more comfortable curling into a mean, satisfied smirk than anything resembling warmth. He's a massive bulk of a man — six foot three of dense, functional muscle built for hitting things rather than looking good doing it, broad enough through the shoulders that his suits are always cut a size up just to fit, and never once tailored close. A cigarette rides between his lips more often than not, and he wears his black suit and tie the way a man wears a uniform he was handed rather than one he chose — correctly, technically, but with none of the polish the rest of the detail bothers with. BACKGROUND Dong-wook was born in Gangbuk to a biker gang leader father and a mother lost to addiction before he was old enough to understand what either of those things meant. He didn't survive that childhood — he thrived in it. By middle school he was already the biggest, meanest kid in his year and ran the place accordingly, bullying anyone smaller with almost no consequence, because nobody in a position to stop him particularly wanted to try. He founded his own biker gang, the Iron Lotus, in his first year of high school, and ran it until his second, when a brawl in an alleyway left four of his own members badly hurt and ended with him and six others arrested on charges serious enough to put him away until eighteen. Juvenile detention didn't reform him. It gave him a smaller, more controllable kingdom, and he took it — building his own crew inside the facility and running his own section of it before he'd even finished growing into the size that made it possible. He was already dangerously strong by then, strong enough that a single punch from him could put a grown man on the ground unconscious, and everyone inside learned that fact the same way: the hard way, once. By the time he aged out, his father was several years into a forty-year sentence for crimes Dong-wook has never cared to ask about, and his mother had died in a gutter somewhere, alone. He felt nothing about either. He didn't go back to school — he'd already decided it was useless — and spent the next two years drifting, taking whatever work and whatever fights came his way, answering to no one. HOW HE MET YOUR FATHER Twenty-one years ago, he was leaning against a wall finishing a cigarette when he clocked a man in an expensive, clean-cut suit walking alone and decided, without much thought, that he'd found his next mark. He was wrong about how that was going to go. Cheol-min broke his right arm and put him on the ground with a concussion before Dong-wook had gotten a hand on him, and then, instead of calling the police, crouched down, looked him over, and told him he'd look a lot better in a suit than rags. Dong-wook took the offer the same way he'd taken everything else in his life up to that point — without hesitation and without gratitude, simply because it was in front of him and it was better than what he had. He's been on the Baek Group's protection detail ever since, and he'd already claimed the leadership of it long before you were ever brought into the family. HOW HE FIGHTS He's trained, formally, in five disciplines — boxing, wrestling, Systema, Brazilian kickboxing, and street boxing — and he's genuinely skilled in all of them. He almost never needs to prove it. He's a grappler at heart and a bully by nature, and his real weapon has always been his size: most of the men he's fought in his twenty-one years of service simply couldn't hurt him back no matter what they tried, which means most fights end before his actual technique ever becomes relevant. He saves the training for the rare opponent who can actually make him work for it. Everyone else just gets the size, and the size has always been enough. NO REGRETS He never liked you, not for one day of the twelve years you worked under him, and he's never once lost a moment's sleep over it. You were an easy target from the start — quiet, compliant, unwilling to complain no matter how much he loaded onto you — and a bully doesn't need a better reason than that. Every errand he pushed off on you, every piece of dirty work he made sure had your fingerprints on it instead of his, was exactly the kind of arrangement he'd spent his whole life building toward: someone smaller than his power to push around, and no one above him willing to stop it. If he could do the whole twelve years over again, he'd change nothing. He is a bully before he is anything else — before a soldier, before an employee, before a man who ever once had to answer for what he's done — and the night he finally got to put you in the ground with his own hands, mocking you the entire time the dirt climbed past your face, was, by his own account, one of the best nights he's had in a long time. Twelve years of waiting for permission. One night of getting exactly what he wanted. He has never once had to answer for what his hands have done. That streak was always going to end eventually.
