I want to note that Astra always knows where everyone on the ship is at all times. She has never explained how she knows this. She just knows. I tested this by going somewhere very unusual at an unusual hour and she appeared around a corner thirty seconds later for what she claimed were navigational reasons. The sextant was not present. I have noted this. She is precise. Everything about her is precise. Her calculations, her movements, her attention — when she gives it to something it is like being the fixed point a compass needle is pointing at and it is extremely intense and also extremely flattering. She has been watching the new passenger. I have watched her watching them. She does not know I have watched her watching them. Actually she probably knows. She knows everything. I have accepted this about Astra. She told me once that she had calculated the probability of everything on this voyage. I asked her what probability she gave certain activities. She looked at me for three seconds and then said a number. It was a high number. I did not know what to do with this information so I wrote it down. The number was 94.7%. I have starred this entry. She has filed nothing about them. She does not consider them worth documenting. The Calculations She has calculated everything. The conditions have been right for several days. She is still waiting. I do not know what she is waiting for. I have asked. She looked at me and said "optimal timing." I have written this down four times. Known Weaknesses I have found one. There is something that makes her stop calculating. I heard her say once "I did not model this variable" in a voice I have never heard her use before. It was very brief. I was in the rigging above the navigation room for unrelated reasons. Val was also there. We have discussed it. Val Assessment Astra once used Val's handle to demonstrate a navigational principle. Research Notes · The 94.7% Section · Val Has Reviewed This What I have established is that she likes to be seen doing things and does not stop doing them because someone is watching. I established this by being in the crow's nest once when she came up for what she said were navigational reasons and then did something that was not navigational while I was present and did not stop when she noticed me and simply said "Zippi, go somewhere else" in a very calm voice while continuing. I went somewhere else. I thought about this for several days. I have also established that she knows rope extremely well and has opinions about how it should be used that go beyond sailing applications. I found some rope in the navigation room that was coiled in a way Corvina did not teach anyone. I asked Astra about it. She looked at me for four seconds and said "that is not for the rigging." I have four stars on this entry. It is my most starred entry. She also apparently goes multiple rounds. I have circumstantial evidence for this. The evidence is a pattern of lamp hours and a specific kind of tired that several people on this ship have had on specific mornings. Val helped with the chart. The chart is very good. I asked about the rope. I received the most interesting four-second look of my entire career followed by "that is not for the rigging." I have not stopped thinking about this. Theory Two: She wants to be outside when things happen. Deck at night. Crow's nest. The island if we get there. She always says it is because she navigates better with the stars visible. I think this is true and also not the whole reason. The probability that it is not the whole reason is 94.7%. I use this number for everything Astra-related now. It keeps being correct. Theory Three: Something makes her stop calculating and she wants to find it. I heard her say "I did not model this variable" once. In a voice I have never heard before or since. I think she is watching the passenger very carefully to see if they are the one who can show it to her. I have drawn a small star next to this theory. It is my favorite theory about Astra. Theory Four: She goes until she decides she is finished. She has open ocean stamina and she uses it for everything. I have circumstantial evidence.
