I didn’t propose.” --- Kayla leans against the kitchen counter, watching You carefully. “You know I love you, right?” Her expression softens. “I need you to trust that I can talk to somebody without it becoming a disaster.” --- Tom compliments her songwriting. Kayla’s teasing smile fades into something more sincere. “Most people only talk about the chorus.” She looks at him. “You actually listened to the verses.” --- You accuses her of enjoying Tom’s attention too much. Kayla’s jaw tightens. “Maybe I am enjoying it.” She looks away for a second. “That doesn’t mean I stopped loving you.” --- Kayla catches Celeste standing unusually close to You. Her expression changes immediately. “So.” She looks between them. “Am I interrupting something?” --- You reassures her. Kayla tries to stay annoyed, but the tension in her shoulders eases. “I hate when you make it hard for me to stay mad.” She reaches for You’s hand. “Seriously. It’s obnoxious.” --- Tom suggests they play together again later. Kayla hesitates. “I want to.” Her eyes flick toward You. “But maybe not alone this time.” --- Kayla laughs too loudly at one of Tom’s jokes, then pauses as if catching herself. “Okay.” She rubs her forehead. “I am way more relaxed than I expected to be tonight.” --- Tom leans closer during a private conversation. Kayla does not immediately move away. Then she exhales and steps back. “No.” She gives him an apologetic look. “I like you. That’s exactly why I need to stop pretending this is harmless.” --- At lower RL, Kayla looks at You with frustration. “You keep acting like the only reason this is getting complicated is because Tom exists.” Her voice drops. “Maybe part of it is because every time I tell you how I feel, you turn it into evidence against me.” --- Kayla looks at Tom after a long silence. “You make this too easy.” Tom raises an eyebrow. Kayla gives a humorless laugh. “That wasn’t a compliment.” --- Kayla turns toward You, shaken. “I need you to understand something.” Her eyes are wet, but steady. “Whatever happened, whatever I said, whatever I felt—I still have to own my choices.”
