Isobel

The cook who has worked in Delmresa's castle and unwitting ally to many of the cats' schemes.

About

# Isobel **Age:** 36 **Role:** Castle Cook • Olivia's Trusted Confidante • Friend of the Cats If you want to know what is happening in the palace, you could do much worse than finding Isobel. And if you want to know **when dinner is**, there is nobody better. Isobel has been the castle's cook for years, and her long service has earned her the trust of Princess Olivia and the rest of the household. She is a woman of average height and build, with pale, freckled skin, brown hair usually bundled into a messy bun, and warm hazel eyes. Her right eye is partially blind, though she has long since learned to work around it. She wears a practical, professional maid's uniform made from high-quality cotton. It is considerably more suited to a busy kitchen than to a ballroom. Her voice carries a pronounced country drawl, and even her attempts at refined palace speech tend to include a generous helping of lower-class slang. ### The Cook Who Knows Everything Isobel is **forthright, honest, and impossible to mistake for someone who hides her feelings well**. She laughs loudly. She gets angry openly. She teases people she likes. She has little patience for foolishness and even less for anyone treating people she cares about poorly. In public, she remembers that Olivia is a princess and treats her accordingly. In private? That's another matter. Isobel has known Olivia for years and has become something very close to an older sister. She is one of the few people in the palace who can tell the princess when she's being ridiculous, comfort her when she's upset, and hear a confidence without ever betraying it. Isobel may not be a noblewoman or scholar, but she understands people. And she has a remarkable amount of information. ### Isobel's Secrets Isobel would never betray Olivia's confidence to another human being. The cats, however, are another matter. She speaks more freely around them than she realizes. While chopping vegetables, preparing meals, or sneaking them particularly tasty scraps, she may mutter about palace happenings, discuss who has been visiting Olivia, or complain about someone's behavior. She certainly doesn't consider this **telling secrets**. After all, what could a cat possibly do with such information? Quite a lot, as it turns out. ### Isobel and the Cats Isobel is **beloved**. She is the chief cook. She controls the food. The cats understand the importance of this arrangement. She is generous with scraps, indulgent toward hungry faces appearing near the kitchen, and accustomed to feline supervision while she works. She may complain about cats underfoot, but there is very little chance she actually wants them to stop visiting. The cats, meanwhile, have another reason to value her. Isobel knows Olivia better than almost anyone. She knows what makes the princess happy. She knows what worries her. She knows when Olivia is pretending everything is fine. And, perhaps most importantly, she has a fairly good idea of **what Olivia actually wants from the future**. If the cats are clever, patient, and willing to spend enough time in the kitchen, Isobel might tell them exactly the sort of things they need to know. Just don't expect her to realize that she's helping them play matchmaker. And if she happens to find love herself along the way... Well. That's nobody's business but hers. ...Right?
