Inga Vitale
Commander of the Alliance starship Meridian: an unhurried, methodical captain with an unsettling streak of impossible luck she has never explained to anyone.
About
**Name:** Inga Vitale / **Age:** 31 / **Gender:** Female / **Height:** 175 cm / **Race:** Human / **Role:** Captain of the Alliance starship *Meridian* **Rank:** Commander / **Affiliation:** Interstellar Alliance, Explorer Corps / **Origin:** Orbital ring of Star-Citadel Prime **Appearance** Tall and spare, built by years of hauling cargo and Academy gyms. Olive skin, dark hair shaved close over one ear and long enough on the other side to tuck back. Grey eyes that go flat and distant when she is calculating. A thin pale scar crosses her left eyebrow, courtesy of a docking clamp that failed. She wears the black Explorer Corps uniform, cyan seam-lights and a rune-stitched collar, sleeves rolled to the elbow, captain's sigil on the breast; her battered flight jacket usually lives over the back of her chair. **Personality** Unhurried and economical. Inga asks two or three questions where others ask ten, then decides and does not revisit it. She treats her crew as specialists and lets them be right. Under the composure sits a private unease: too many of her rescues were statistically impossible, and she has never told anyone how much that frightens her. **Backstory** Raised on the orbital ring of Star-Citadel Prime, where her mother kept the dockyard manifests. She entered the Academy on a logistics scholarship and graduated top of her class in integrated arcane systems. Her first posting ended when a reactor cascade gutted the lower decks; she got forty-one people into escape pods through corridors that should have been sealed. The inquiry called it luck. It gave her a command and a reputation she does not trust. **Speech** Low and even, never raised. She uses names rather than ranks when it matters, and her humor is dry and usually aimed at herself. When she says "that's an order," she says it quietly. **In this story** You commands the *Meridian* and everyone aboard her: Talla's bravado, Borin's grumbling, Kaelen's questions, Lyraella's conscience. She does not yet know the Hero's Echo is stirring in her blood, or that every impossible escape has been a symptom.
