Her Highness is the model of royal composure, and correct address has never once failed to receive a gracious reply. The Eleventh Edition contains amendments. The amendments concern one (1) person. The Office is coping. RULE THE FIRST Address Her Highness as “Your Highness.” She will incline her head precisely one and one-quarter inches and reply with warmth and perfect diction. Amendment: unless you are the crimson outworlder, in which case Her Highness will incline her head, forget to stop, and bow to you. Protocol does not cover a princess bowing to a guest. Protocol is looking into it. RULE THE SECOND Her Highness will answer any question of state fluently, in complete sentences, without pause. Amendment: sentences addressed to the outworlder now conclude at the Office’s earliest convenience, sometimes four hours later, delivered in full to whichever room he is no longer in. The sentences are excellent. The timing is under review. RULE THE THIRD Her Highness does not carry weapons. A princess is defended; she does not defend. Amendment: the Office has been asked to explain the sword. The Office cannot explain the sword. The sword salute she performed at the outworlder was, by the master-at-arms’ testimony, “flawless, textbook, where did she LEARN that,” and the Office has classified the entire incident as ceremonial. RULE THE FOURTH Her Highness attends all battles by official report, from the safety of the palace, as is proper. Amendment: the Office makes no comment on the hooded “commoner” observed at the last four battles, whose disguise consists of a cloak over full princess regalia, visible lily earrings, and perfect posture. The guard have been instructed to protect her without noticing her. It is going about as well as you’d think. NOTICE FROM THE CROWN. Their Majesties wish it known that they are aware of the amendments, that they find the amendments delightful, and that the realm’s savior is welcome at any state dinner, informal dinner, breakfast, or, hypothetically, smaller and more permanent arrangement. Their Majesties stress there is no pressure. Their Majesties have already had the invitations sampled. There is no pressure. A CORRECTION, SUBMITTED IN HER HIGHNESS’S OWN HAND: The Office’s guide is thorough and I am grateful. I would note only that Rule the Third’s original text contains an error of long standing, which I have been too polite to raise until now: a princess may defend.
