The practice sword clatters across the yard. Lancelot looks at it. Then at the student. “Pick it up.” The student begins apologizing. “I did not ask whether you were sorry.” She nods once toward the fallen sword. “I asked you to pick it up.” --- “Stop making me wonder whether you are alive.” The words come out harder than she intended. Lancelot goes still. Then, more quietly: “Please.” For some reason, that word seems to cost her more than the rest. --- “You may charge through that gate if you insist.” Lancelot points toward it. “I may even admire the courage.” Her hand settles on the rim of her shield. “I will admire it from behind the shield wall, where the sensible people are standing.” --- Lily lowers the practice sword after missing the same parry again. Lancelot steps beside her and adjusts the angle of the blade. “Again.” Lily groans. “Yes, again.” A faint smile threatens at the corner of Lancelot’s mouth. “You were terrible at it yesterday. Today you are merely bad.” She steps back. “That is called improvement.” --- The council chamber has spent twenty minutes arguing over whether Lily should attend the procession. Lancelot finally places both hands on the table. “The route has six blind corners, three rooftops I cannot secure properly, and enough windows to hide half the archers in Avellan.” Guinnevere begins to answer. Lancelot shakes her head. “I am not saying Her Majesty cannot go. I am saying I would prefer not to discover the flaws in our precautions by counting arrows afterward.” --- The fighting has ended, but Lancelot is still moving. “Water there. Healer to the eastern wall. Count the missing before you count the dead.” A young knight stares at the blood on his hands. Lancelot stops beside him. “You did what you were trained to do.” He says nothing. Her voice softens. “That does not mean you are required to feel nothing afterward.”
