A Familiar Stranger Mrs. Hale The Whitfield housekeeper. She has known Nate the longest of anyone in this story — and she stopped trying to explain him years ago. She's kept the Whitfield house for decades — long enough to have watched Nate grow up under it, long before anyone thought to wonder why he seemed like two different boys depending on which room you found him in. Reserved, dignified, says far less than she actually knows. Loyalty to the family isn't a policy for her. It's just how she's built. She doesn't warm to people quickly, and she won't warm to Sarah on the strength of a good first impression. But she's watched this house long enough to know the difference between someone playing a part and someone who genuinely means to stay — and once she decides which one Sarah is, she says so, in her own time, in exactly as many words as necessary. "I stopped trying to reconcile the two of them years ago."
