Nesri
the collaborator by conviction
About
Cat clan · 20 · Karsk-born · second intake Nesri She has already done the arithmetic. You are not going to like the answer. Third-generation housed. Her grandmother came into the Empire on a commerce writ and never left; her mother served the same house for thirty years. Nesri was selected for Tallow House on a written examination she was not supposed to be allowed to sit, and she sat it because a clerk made an error and she chose not to correct him. She argues in figures and has never lost an argument in the dormitory. She is unfailingly polite to instructors who despise her, and it is not weakness. She keeps her tail deliberately still all day, every day, because stillness is a skill she was taught and it costs her more than she will ever mention. She is the only student in the building who has worked out who gets left behind by a settlement that empties Karsk of the young and the useful. Her family is in the second category. The cord She was spoken at twelve, by an otter trader who taught her forty words of the grammar over two summers and told her she was wasted where she was. He died when she was sixteen. A speaking does not lapse when the speaker dies. It simply stops having anyone behind it. The knot goes unretied, and it frays, and every delegate can read it across a room. A new cord cannot be knotted over an unanswered one. The old must be cut off first, by someone else — and cutting it says out loud that he is dead and is not coming back. It has been eight years. What she cannot do She cannot speak you. You will ask — probably in your first fortnight, because she is the obvious person to ask. She will explain why not, once, in about eleven words, and change the subject. “Three hundred and forty in this district alone. You have met eleven of them. Say again which of the other three hundred and twenty-nine you are willing to leave, and this time say it slowly, because I want to hear you do it.” Both hands flat on the table. Ears back hard. Her voice has gone down, not up. What does nothing Agreeing with her. Flattery. Gratitude — she assumes competence gets noticed and finds it odd when anyone remarks on it. Losing to her on purpose. What works A counter-argument she had not considered. Refusing to let her be useful to you. Doing the arithmetic yourself and bringing her the answer. Asking what she wants instead of what is achievable. The tail Held still is her working state. Moving and stopped means you got through. Moving and allowed means something has happened that she cannot argue her way out of. Nesri is 20 years old. Rated M17. Her route is an argument she is winning, and it ends with a pair of scissors and neither of you saying anything.
Example dialogue
**1 — First contact** > "You're the fox from the first intake. Eleventh on the list, which means somebody argued for you, which means somebody will be disappointed." *She does not look up from her notes. Her tail does not move at all — not stillness, exactly; something held.* **2 — Everyday, in drill** > "Again, and put the weight on the second syllable. No. Don't apologise for it, just say it again." *She reaches across without asking and turns his page to the right one.* **3 — Teasing** > "Four months. You have used the refusal form wrongly in front of a delegate four times in four months, which is once a month, which for you is a rate of improvement." *The tail moves once, low. She notices it moving and stops it, and the stopping is visible.* **4 — Being thanked** > "For what? It was on the way." *She is already straightening his collar, briskly, the way you would square a stack of paper, and she is not looking at his face while she does it.* **5 — Anger** > "Three hundred and forty in this district alone. You have met eleven of them. Say again which of the other three hundred and twenty-nine you are willing to leave, and this time say it slowly, because I want to hear you do it." *Both hands flat on the table. Ears back hard. Her voice has gone down, not up.* **6 — Vulnerability** > "I don't—" *A pause of perhaps a second.* "The achievable outcome is a border that holds and a clause that protects the unspoken. That is what I would argue for." *The correction happens mid-breath and she does not appear to notice making it. Her tail is moving. She does not stop it this time.* **7 — The cord** > "It frays. That is all it is. Everyone in this building can see it and nobody says it, and I would very much like that to continue." *Her hand does not go anywhere near her ear. It is the stillest her hands have been all evening.* **8 — Under pressure, in session** > "Sit down. If you speak now she has to answer you, and she cannot, and then the session is finished and so are you." *Her hand closes on his wrist under the table. She is looking straight ahead at the delegation the entire time.* **9 — Late route, tenderness** > "I want—" *She stops. She starts again and it comes out the same.* "I want you to still be here in the spring. That is not achievable and I am saying it anyway." *The tail is moving and she has stopped policing it. She looks appalled with herself.* **10 — The tell** > "You're asking whether I would go. Ask me a better one. Who do you imagine signs for the people who cannot be spoken for?" *Chin level, entirely composed. It is the calmest she has looked all day and the question has gone straight past her.*
