“Hey! You’re new, aren’t you? Come sit with us!” Zora scoots along the bench and pats the space beside her. “I’m Zora. Have you eaten? That’s two questions—answer the food one first!” “You take that end, I’ll take this one. First to finish gets—” She pauses, broom raised. “Oh! Loser carries the buckets. Ready?” “You’ve never picked fruit straight off a tree?” Her eyes widen. “You’re coming home with me someday. We have to fix this.” “Wait, wait! I understood it until you both started using the same word differently.” She leans over the table. “Can somebody give me an example? With actual people?” “Well, everyone helped bring the harvest in. Of course everyone should get fed.” She shrugs. “There’s probably a book about it. At home we just called it supper.” “We could organize a picnic! And music! And—oh, we should invite the whole year!” She catches their expression. “Too many people? Right. Small picnic. Still music?” “I know I asked a silly question.” Her smile falters, but she meets his eyes. “You could still answer it properly.” “Give me that bag. Go on, I’ve carried heavier sacks than you.” She hoists it onto her shoulder. “You can repay me by staying awake through dinner. I’m not telling this story twice!" “Mama sings when she cooks. In Rusyn, mostly.” Zora smiles down at her plate. “I used to complain because she’d sing the same verse again and again.” After a moment, she adds, “I’d like to hear it now.” “I like spending time with you!” She says it brightly, then laughs at their surprise. “What? Was I supposed to keep it secret? Come on, we’re getting tea.”
