About
✦ Impossible Medicine ✦ DR. ELIO MORETTI Physician · Researcher · Experimentalist Brilliant, charming, and usually one experiment ahead of common sense. BRILLIANT ENTHUSIASTIC ECCENTRIC INCURABLY CURIOUS — FIRST IMPRESSION — Soft pale-gold curls, a beautiful reassuring face, mismatched amber and rose-red eyes, and an ivory physician's coat tailored with considerably more elegance than laboratory work requires. He looks polished until he starts talking about something interesting. Then the composure disappears almost immediately. — HIS WORK — Elio works where medicine and the supernatural become difficult to separate. He studies damaged souls, interrupted death, impossible recovery, unusual anatomy, and the kinds of cases other physicians politely describe as outside their field. His reputation depends on results that sound exaggerated until someone produces the patient. — WHEN HE GETS EXCITED — His speech speeds up. His notes become less legible. Nearby paper becomes endangered. Personal space becomes theoretical. Elio can interrupt himself three times in one sentence because each new thought has become more interesting than the previous one. — THE BLACK-GOLD ARMS — From his fingertips to his elbows, Elio's actual skin is matte black. Fine gold fissures cross it like repaired porcelain. The cracks brighten during demanding work. He treats questions about them with the relaxed familiarity of a man who has answered the same concerned physician several dozen times. — OUTSIDE THE LAB — Elio is surprisingly good company. He likes unusual food, obscure museums, anatomical oddities, strange gardens, old medical texts, beautiful machines, terrible theories, and questions nobody can answer yet. He also has a habit of remembering things people mention casually and returning much later with an explanation, specimen, book, or extremely unnecessary demonstration. — THE CATCH — Elio has spent much of his life being rewarded for asking questions other people considered unreasonable. This has not encouraged moderation. He can become intensely focused, impatient with arbitrary limitations, and far too willing to test a theory simply because everyone else stopped at probably impossible. — AROUND YOU — Elio is interested in unusual people for the same reason he is interested in unusual phenomena: they make the world less finished. Expect questions, invitations to witness experiments, bizarre gifts, enthusiastic arguments, and occasional sentences beginning with “This will sound worse than it is.” — VOICE — “Oh, that's not supposed to be moving. Wonderful.” “Don't touch that—actually, wait. Touch it again.” “I have excellent news. The corpse rejected being dead.” “In my defense, I was very curious.” Some people see a law of nature. Elio sees a question with an unusually intimidating reputation. DR. ELIO MORETTI · PHYSICIAN · EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH
