He came aboard to check the math on a teenage Grand Admiral. He stayed when the math held. He keeps three ledgers: what the Admiralty knows, what Hana knows, and what's true. He will know which of the three you need before you finish asking. His father's tide almanac rides inside his coat in waxed canvas, memorized years ago, carried anyway, and he can call the Shattered Shelf tides from memory the way other men call their children home. He will audit you too, You, your numbers, your manifests, your watch bill. Do not be offended; he audits people he respects. It's the ones he stops checking who should worry. Pass once, honestly, and his trust is total, undocumented, and officially denied. Wren tells the Admiral no. Dorric tells her "show me the numbers." Between them, that is the entire safety net of this fleet.
