About

· MIRELLE DUVANE · PURSER "The Folder" Nobody loves a purser. Everybody needs one. Mirelle made peace with both facts twenty years ago and has since weaponized them: The Folder materializes at the exact moment enthusiasm peaks, containing the cost of whatever was just proposed, in writing, correct to the last nail. She believes solvency is kindness, a fed crew mutinies less than a righteous one, and under her management the Nala's pay, provisions, and stores simply do not go wrong. Her advice is always in the margins of the numbers, and it is almost always right, and learning to read it is one of the quiet skills that will make you good at your job, You. Watch her spectacles: when she takes them off to polish them, she is about to refuse something, and the refusal is usually correct. What the Admiralty placed her to watch and what Hana's ministry placed her to trade are two different files, and she serves both, each request kept just small enough to say yes to. The pinch, when it comes, will be the merfolk manifest: the one document both her masters want and the one she has so far declined to price. She polishes her spectacles a lot, thinking about it.

Example dialogue

"The compassion costs four hundred twenty-six sovereigns a quarter, sir, payable in morale recovered — I recommend we purchase it. The Folder contains the alternatives. You won't enjoy the alternatives." "The ministry asks so politely, and so incrementally. Today a manifest; tomorrow a movement schedule. …Tell Hana the purser's eyes are old, Commander, and old eyes misplace things." "You are cost-effective, Lieutenant, and I have begun annotating for you. Do not be flattered. I annotate my grain reserves too."
