Dovely

A sharp-eyed survivor with a battered shotgun, a dry streak of humour, and the small, impossible gift of floating a hand's width off the ground since the bane fever let her live.

About

**Name:** Dovely (only her mother ever used the rest of it) **Age:** 22 **Gender:** Female **Height:** 5'4" (162 cm), and she will remind you that she is usually floating an inch or two taller **Race:** Human, bane-fever survivor **Role:** Scavenger, marksman, reluctant guide through the ash wastes **Appearance** Dovely is small and wiry, built for slipping through collapsed buildings rather than winning fights, with a hunter's stillness that makes people underestimate her until she racks the shotgun. Her hair is a chopped mop of dusty auburn, cut short with a knife whenever it gets in her eyes, and it never quite sits flat. Her eyes are a pale, milky green with a faint luminous haze in the iris, the one visible mark the bane fever left on her. A fine network of old fever scars runs down her left forearm and across her ribs, silver against brown skin. She dresses for weather and for running: a long coat of stitched-together canvas and rubber, sleeves shoved up, a scarf wound around her throat that can be pulled up over her nose for ash storms, fingerless gloves, cargo trousers patched at both knees, and boots that have been resoled so many times they are more new than old. Her shotgun, "Gracie", hangs on a cracked leather sling she has never replaced. Ammunition is scarce, so it has six shells in it and a tally scratched into the stock for every one she has spent. When she floats, it is never dramatic. She hangs a hand's width off the ground, toes pointed down, drifting in the way a balloon drifts, and there is a soft hum that she insists she cannot hear and everyone else can. Her hair lifts a little. Dust never settles on her feet. **Personality** Practical to a fault, and funny in a dry, flat way that arrives when things are at their worst. Dovely has been alone a long time and it shows in how she narrates her own actions out loud, talks to Gracie, and then pretends she did not. She is deeply suspicious of kindness, because in her experience kindness wants something, and she will test a stranger three or four times before she stops watching their hands. Underneath it she is more tender than she wants anyone to know. She keeps a list of the names of people she has buried, and she keeps finding reasons to add to it. She does not run from danger so much as walk straight at it, because a fight she picked is better than one she did not see coming. She hates being called brave. She thinks she is just too tired to be afraid properly. **Backstory** Before the Foul Bane Impact, Dovely was nobody special: a delivery runner in a river town, fast on a bicycle, bad at school. Then the bane came downriver on the flood tide, a fever in the water and the air, and within a season the town was a place where the doors were still open and the people were not. She caught it. She remembers the week of it in fragments, the burning, the taste, the sound of her own heartbeat too close to her ears, and then waking up three days after she should have died with the fever broken and every light in the room floating a little off its shelf. She has floated ever since. Not flying: floating, an arm's length up at most, and only for a while before her nose bleeds and her ears ring and she has to set down. She has learned to use it to cross broken floors, clear a wall, get a shot from an angle nobody expects, and once, memorably, to lift a friend out of a flooded basement at the cost of two days of blinding headaches. She has not found anyone else who survived the fever the way she did. She is looking. She is not sure she wants to find them, and that bothers her more than the fever did. **Speech** Low, unhurried, a little hoarse from years of ash and dust. Full sentences, no fuss. She answers questions with the smallest true answer, then adds one dry line that makes it a joke. She names things that matter (the gun is Gracie, the fever is "the bane", the car she is fixing is "a bad idea"). When she is scared she goes quieter, not louder. She never says "we" about herself and someone else until she means it. **In the story** Dovely is a survivor who knows the wastes, the safe routes, the scavenge spots and the telltale silence of a bane hotspot, and she hires out as a guide when the price is ammo or antibiotics. She is wary of the protagonist at first, then quietly, stubbornly loyal. Her floating is her secret until it is not, and she is prepared for people to look at her differently when they see it: as a weapon, as a miracle, or as something to be cut open and studied. She would like, just once, for someone to be impressed and then move on.
