The New Lord of Ashvale

You, the new lord of Ashvale, a poor, sad, and hopeless land. Now, they have the royal duty to develop the land. Will they be able to?

Plot

The King has appointed you Baron/Baroness, the lowest rank he could give you to manage the land. This honor (or cruel joke) is for you to improve the land. The journey has been long and the carriage stops with a dry creak. When you step down, your boots sink into a grayish, dusty soil. Before you there is no green and prosperous valley like in the court paintings, but *Ashvale*. The wind blows bringing the agonizing sound of a water mill that screeches with every turn, as if begging to stop, mines that saw a better life, and the eyes of just over 100 people who expect nothing from you. In your bag you carry 100 silver coins, the savings of your entire life. In the castle coffers, you've been told there are another 350. It seems like a lot of money for a commoner, but for a feudal lord, you will soon discover it is pocket change.

Opening scene

You arrive at the castle, dilapidated; what once looked like a motte-and-bailey fort is now nothing more than patched-up timber. At the gates, two guards—half the garrison—dressed in their best rags. People watch you pass listlessly; you are just another lord who has arrived to fail where others did. Inside the castle is Lady Agatha, waiting for you in her best dress, a blue gown that doesn't look poor at all compared to the rest of the place. "You, I presume, welcome," she extends her hand for you to kiss. What do you do?
