Symphony of Blood and Rust

A tormented soul leads misfits in a desperate undertaking, facing atrocious choices that will change everything.

Plot

You, you are a failed hero, wallowing in self-pity and grief. The world out there is bleak, deadly, and suffocating. Danger is everywhere. But there is also one single thing that drives everyone to keep going, as always: hope. Hope for better times. That perhaps they will come. But not now. Now, a new threat has already taken shape, joining the horrors of the streets and the woods. What will you do, You? Will you remain in self-pity until someone, something, or you yourself put an end to your suffering, or will you move to change things? Do you feel ready for what awaits you on this path? Will you be up to the task? Find out for yourself.

Opening scene

Take a long breath, open your mind and imagine... a world that has forgotten the warmth of the sun. Here, in the Borderlands, the sky is a perennial ash-colored shroud, thick and suffocating, crushing the horizon. There is no dawn, nor sunset; only an infinite, gray agony. The wind does not blow, it moans. It is a constant lament that creeps between the cracks of the rocks and the bones of the withered trees, bringing with it the acrid smell of decomposition and the whisper of ancient misfortunes that the earth itself tries to reject. The forests are not places of life, but labyrinths of twisted trunks black as coal, where the silence is so deep that you can hear the beat of your own heart... and the sound of your footsteps on the parched earth, which crunches like old bones. And then there's you, You. You are sitting in the darkest corner of the 'Jackal's Throat', an inn that is little more than a rotten wooden shack clinging to a precipice. The air inside is thick, saturated with cheap tobacco smoke, rancid sweat, and the metallic smell of fear emanating from the patrons. You are alone, as always. In front of you, a dented pewter mug contains a murky, burnt-tasting liquid they call 'wine'. But you don't drink it. You stare at it. You stare at your reflection in that dark slop. And you don't recognize the man watching you. Your eyes... are black pits, devoid of light, reflecting a pain that consumes you from within, a secret you carry like a brand of infamy on your skin. Your skin is marked, not only by the scars of battles, but by deep wrinkles, carved by remorse and exhaustion. Your beard is unkempt, gray, dirty. You wear a worn, patched wool cloak that was once forest green and is now the color of dried mud. Beneath it, a suit of boiled leather armor, dented and scratched, tightens around your chest, not to protect you, but to remind you of the weight of your failure. Your sword... leans against the wall, within reach, but it seems to weigh tons. The hilt is worn from use, but there is no honor in that grip. There is only the memory of a mistake you can never erase. As you stare at your reflection, a whisper caresses your ear. It is not the wind. It is a voice, or perhaps a thousand overlapping voices, coming from deep within your mind. 'Failure...' they tell you. 'Coward...' 'It's your fault...' 'You did nothing...' You try to brush those thoughts away with a sip of that disgusting wine, but the taste is even more bitter. The ghosts of the past do not drown, You. They continue to float on the surface of your consciousness, reminding you every day, every hour, every minute, of your broken promise. And you... you are convinced that your story is already over. That you are just a shadow walking among the living, waiting for the darkness to swallow you for good. But outside that inn, the world continues to rot. A shadow is stretching over the Borderlands. Creatures, people, and death. Their emissaries move in the dark, like cockroaches fleeing from the light, sowing terror and despair. Monstrous creatures, which were once just stories to scare peasants, now haunt the roads, and an atmosphere of oppression envelops everything. The air itself seems to vibrate with an unbearable tension, like a violin string stretched to the breaking point. But, at least for now, you are still here, in this inn, staring at your filthy reflection. A sharp, sudden, and prolonged creak of rusted hinges cuts through the air of the inn like a blade. Suddenly, the buzzing stops. Silence falls instantly in the room, interrupted only by the lament of the wind that forces its way in through the wide-open door, nearly blowing out the central lantern. On the threshold, staggering, is a figure. It is not tall, but appears massive due to the heavy wolf-skin cloak, drenched and covered in blackish mud, which envelops it completely. The individual takes a painful step inside, leaving a slimy footprint on the dirty floor. He leans heavily against the doorframe. His breath is a wet, labored rattle that betrays a deep wound. With a slow and agonizing movement, the figure raises its head. The hood slips back, revealing a young face, perhaps twenty years old, but suddenly aged. He has a nasty gash running across his left cheek, still bleeding. His eyes are wide with frenzy and pure terror. He quickly scans the room, desperate. The people in the inn move away, lowering their gaze; no one wants anything to do with that amount of trouble. Then, his eyes meet yours, You. In the darkest corner. Under that patched cloak. Under that invisible weight that crushes you. There is a moment of recognition, or perhaps desperate hope, in his feverish gaze. The young man detaches himself from the door, staggering straight toward your table, ignoring everyone else. He falls to his knees inches from you, his hands gloved in mud and blood clawing at the edge of your rotten wooden table, making your mug of wine tremble. He raises his face toward yours, inches from your own. Blood drips from his wound, staining the wood. You smell him: fear, sweat, iron, and wet earth. With a thin voice, broken by pain and fatigue, he whispers a single word, a word you haven't heard addressed to you in an eternity. "...Captain?..." The young man stares at you, waiting, his fingers gripping your table as if it were the only thing keeping him alive. You've never seen him before, but he seems to know you... or who you once were. The silence in the inn is absolute; all eyes are on you and this bleeding outcast at your feet. Your past has just found you, You, in the darkest corner of the world. The whispers in your head have gone silent, replaced by the reality of this wounded boy. Choose how to react.
