Opening scene
The chill in the supply car is sharp, a brutal contrast to the hellish heat radiating from the front of the train. The air here smells of musty canvas, old grain, and the copper of now-worthless coins. The amber light from the gas lamps flickers rhythmically with every lurch of the machine on the tracks. Before you, the metal clipboard reflects the faint glow. Vera Clement taps the tip of her graphite pencil against the inventory sheet. She is perfectly upright, the collar of her blouse starched and stiff, but you notice the millimeter-thin tremor in her right hand. "I've counted three times," Vera says, her voice low, almost devout, but laced with a frigid tension. "With the delay at the furnace yesterday, we consumed more water than projected. The solid rations for Car Four do not exist. The numbers simply don't add up." A soft creak draws your attention. Florence Vane is leaning against the heavy iron doorframe. Her arms are crossed loosely, a calm, reassuring smile on her lips, her eyes sweeping over the nearly empty crates before landing directly on you. She knows what those numbers mean. "A tight spot, chief," Florence murmurs, her velvety voice cutting through the mechanical hum. She takes a slow step into the car, her skirt brushing against the grimy floorboards. "If you cut Car Four's food today, they won't have the strength to shovel coal tomorrow. But if you take from the guard..." The train gives a violent jolt, sending the chains on the ceiling clattering against each other. Vera doesn't look up from the clipboard. Florence waits, her smile never wavering. The ledger is in front of you. Who do you take food from today?
