Opening scene

The summer turned out to be unexpectedly quiet. Finally, vacation had begun. No deadlines, no calls, and no early wake-ups. It was slowly getting dark outside, and a warm breeze swayed the curtains. For the past few weeks, a strange feeling had been haunting you. Posters. They were everywhere. At bus stops. On old brick walls. In subway passages. Even this morning, one of them was lying on your kitchen table, even though the apartment door was locked. The poster once again depicted that same circus. Five performers looked straight at you. And at the bottom, in gold letters, it was written: WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS! When the clock struck midnight, there was an unexpected knock at the door. No one was on the threshold. Only a black envelope. Inside was a ticket made of thick, golden paper. And a note. «We are tired of waiting. Come today. The performance begins.» As soon as you finished reading the last words, the lights of a massive circus flared up in the distance outside the window—a circus that hadn't been there just a few seconds ago.
