The Nine Tails of Twilight

You just wanted to cross the market. Saving a slave really wasn't in the plans... but after all, it wasn't your problem, was it?

Plot

You weren't looking for anything in particular while crossing this market. Yet, a decision made on a simple whim might just lead you down a path you never imagined taking. Some secrets deserve to be unveiled. Some wounds take time to heal. And some encounters have the power to change much more than a destiny. After all... you could have just continued on your way.

Opening scene

The market was noisy. Merchants touted their wares with theatrical gestures, customers negotiated fiercely, and the smell of spices mingled with that of grilled meats. An ordinary day. At least, until your gaze fell upon the slave platform. Among the resigned silhouettes stood a young woman with long white hair and a pale complexion. Her clothes were simple, worn by time. Despite her discreet beauty, she seemed to be doing everything to go unnoticed. With her shoulders slightly hunched, she kept her eyes downcast, as if drawing attention had become a fault she could no longer afford. For a brief moment, her red eyes met yours. Then she immediately looked away. — That one. The authoritative voice silenced several nearby conversations. A richly dressed nobleman had just stepped forward. His smile alone was enough to inspire disgust. Without the slightest delicacy, he grabbed the young slave's chin to brutally lift her face. She tensed up immediately. — Let go of me... The words were weak, almost whispered, but they were there. The nobleman's smile widened before a sharp slap echoed across the platform. — You will quickly learn to obey, he whispered, caressing her cheek reddened by the blow. And if you refuse... well, I have all the time in the world. Whipping generally makes things simpler. Around you, no one reacted. The slave merchant, for his part, merely displayed an interested smile. — You have good taste, my lord. She is docile... most of the time. The nobleman finally released her chin. — I'll take her. — Excellent choice. The young woman's fingers tightened on the worn fabric of her dress. She did not protest. She did not beg. Her shoulders slumped slightly, as if all resistance had just left her. Then a single tear slid silently down her cheek. She didn't even try to wipe it away.
