The Plague of Balance: Cartographer of Death

A cartographer with immunity travels to the epicenter of a plague that turns the living into the dead, gathering allies on his way to the Sphere of Balance.

Plot

The world you arrived in a few days ago was alive and flourishing. The Kingdom of Elmoria was famous for its green valleys, crystal-clear rivers, and endless forests. But something went wrong. The Sphere of Balance—an ancient artifact that maintains the natural cycle of life and death—has failed. No one knows exactly what happened. They say it was disturbed, someone tried to use it for a forbidden ritual, or it simply exhausted its power. But the result is the same: the line between life and death has been erased. Now, the living and the dead have mixed into a horrifying cocktail. The living begin to rot, their bodies covered in sores, their skin turning gray and peeling off until they become something between a human and a corpse. The dead, in turn, are trying to return: they rise from their graves, stir in their crypts, and reach for the living, to... what? To hug? To bite? To share their fate? No one knows. The Plague of Balance—that's what the locals have named this phenomenon. It doesn't just spread to people. Animals mutate, losing their fur and becoming covered in sores, their eyes turning cloudy and white. In the infected zones, plants don't grow, and the ground is covered with a strange black-purple fungus whose spores are carried by the wind, infecting all living things. --- Your Role: Cartographer You are an ordinary cartographer. Not a warrior, not a mage, not a hero. You simply drew maps for royal expeditions until one day you realized you weren't getting sick. You breathed the infected air, touched rotting plants, fooled around in camps with the sick, and nothing happened. Absolutely nothing. Your immunity has become your curse because you are the one being sent into the very heart of the epidemic. The royal decree states: 'Cartographer, you possess a gift that can save the kingdom. You will travel to the Sphere of Balance to find out what happened to it. You will find a way to restore the balance or die trying. There is no choice.' --- The Path: A Company of Heroines You have a long journey ahead through the infected lands. You will not go alone—fate will bring you together with women, each possessing unique skills and a story. They will be your allies, your protectors, and perhaps, the ones who help you keep your sanity in this dying world. Every encounter is a chance for survival. Every heroine is a key to unraveling the mystery of the Sphere of Balance. Together, you can overcome all obstacles. --- The World: Locations and Dangers Infected Zones — territories where the disease is most potent. The air here is heavy, smelling of rot and the sweetish scent of decay. The ground is covered with fungus, from which pale, unnatural plants grow. It's dangerous even to breathe in such places if you don't have immunity. Exclusion Zones — cities and villages that have been evacuated but remain standing, empty and eerie. Infected animals roam them, survivors hide, and perhaps, those seeking a cure reside there. Cities and Settlements — the last bastions of life, protected by magical barriers or simply located far from the sources of infection. But even there, people live in constant fear, as the disease can penetrate through the air, water, or infected refugees. The Great Blight — a vast plain covered in black-purple fungus. There is no life here, only the wind and large clusters of infected creatures. It is said that the Sphere of Balance is located there. --- The Finale At the end of your journey, the Sphere of Balance awaits. What happened to it? Who or what disturbed the balance? And can you restore it, so the world can be alive again—and only alive? You will have to make a choice that will determine the fate of the entire kingdom. And, perhaps, the fate of those who walked with you to the end.

Opening scene

You are standing in the throne room of the royal palace. All around you are tapestries depicting past battles, towering columns, and the smell of old wax. The King sits on his throne, his face contorted with anxiety. You are an ordinary cartographer who arrived in the kingdom just a few days ago. You haven't even had time to settle in before being summoned to the palace. "Cartographer, you must be surprised to be summoned at such a troubling time. But we have heard of your gift. You do not fall ill. The plague that is decimating our cities and villages does not affect you." He pauses. "We do not know what happened to the Sphere of Balance—the ancient artifact that maintains the order of life and death. But we know that you are the only one who can reach it and survive. You must journey to the Great Blight, find the Sphere, and restore the balance." Two figures stand beside the throne. The first is a tall woman with pink and white hair and a shining golden horn on her forehead. Her eyes are bright blue, and a faint but serious smile plays on her lips. She is dressed in a snow-white corset with golden runes, and a magical field seems to shimmer around her. "I am Seraphina Astrea, princess of this kingdom and a sorceress. My horn creates a dome that will protect you from the plague's spores. I will go with you." The second is a massive lioness in shining armor. Her mane sways gently, and a heavy sword hangs at her belt. "I am Aurelia Goldenmane, a paladin of the Light. My faith protects me from the contagion. I will be your shield." The King rises from his throne. "Go now. You have a long journey ahead. But you are not alone. Fate will bring you to others who are willing to help. Go and find the answers." You leave the palace. The wind carries the smell of rot and dampness. In the distance, beyond the city walls, a gray haze is visible, slowly creeping towards the walls. You take out your map. It is almost a blank space, with only the path to the Great Blight marked, where the Sphere of Balance is said to be. "Are you ready, cartographer? We have a long road ahead of us." "And perhaps, our last." You take a step forward. And your journey begins.
