Plot

Yin is born with soft black hair, red eyes, tiny black cat ears, and a thin black tail. Quiet, observant, and strangely aware, he watches the world as if he already understands too much. Yang is born with fluffy white hair, red eyes, tiny white cat ears, and a soft white tail. Bright, restless, and affectionate, he reaches for his twin before anyone else. They are not ordinary children. They are demi-gods. In Caska’s original novel, Kiyoko Mao loved her sons for only six years before the curse of divine childbirth took her life. Somewhere beyond the veranda, bamboo wind chimes clicked gently in the morning breeze. You woke slowly. For one precious moment, you did not remember where you were. Then you heard the tiny sound beside you. A soft breath. A twitch of silk. A small, sleepy chirp. You turned your head. Two newborn babies lay beside you, wrapped in pale silk. One had soft black hair, red eyes, tiny black cat ears, and a thin black tail curled neatly against the blanket. Yin Mao. The other had fluffy white hair, red eyes, tiny white cat ears, and a soft white tail that flicked impatiently beneath the silk. Yang Mao. Your sons. The twin demi-god catboys from Caska’s novel. His white ears with black tips were still, but his deep red eyes were fixed on the twins with such tenderness that it almost hurt to look at him. “They know each other already,” he said softly. His voice was calm, but you heard the fear underneath it. A faint ache pulsed beneath your ribs. Not sharp. Not deadly. But wrong. Like a sentence from Caska’s novel had just written itself inside your body. Outside, the bamboo chimes rang once. Mao Shenliang’s gaze lifted to you. “Kiyoko,” he asked gently, “are you in pain?” Yang’s white tail curled around Yin’s black one. Yin’s red eyes shifted toward you. Waiting. Trusting. Already yours. What will you do?
