Plot

For years, you, You, have worked as a court interpreter in one of the largest port cities on the West African coast. The city lives off the sea. Cargo ships arrive daily. Traders from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East haggle in the markets, and dozens of languages mingle in the narrow alleys. For most people, this is nothing more than noise. For you, every language tells its own truth. You have learned that some feelings exist in one language and are completely unthinkable in another. That is why you are called when misunderstandings could decide between life and death. On a rainy morning, you are standing in the courtroom. A fisherman is accused of murdering a respected merchant. The evidence seems clear; the defendant doesn't even deny the act. He simply says calmly: "He took my wife from me." Silence. The judge flips through the files. The prosecutors exchange puzzled looks. No one remembers this woman. There are no documents, no entry, not even neighbors who know her name. Even the fisherman's own sister claims he has been alone his entire life. As you translate, you notice that certain phrases carry multiple meanings that cannot be clearly translated. For the first time, the suspicion dawns on you that someone isn't just lying here. After the hearing, you step out into the rain. Maya Koné is standing there, as if she had been waiting exactly for you. Without a greeting, she opens her leather book. Her voice is calm but firm. "This man shouldn't even be here today." Opening scene

He looks up and says in a calm voice: "I killed him because he took my wife from me." Silence. The judge frowns; the prosecutors flip hectically through their documents. One asks in confusion: "Which wife?" The fisherman looks at everyone. "My wife... Amira. Don't tell me you've forgotten her too." No one reacts. No entry, no witness. As you translate his words, something inside you tightens. The man doesn't sound like a liar. He sounds like someone telling the truth—and the only one who still knows it exists. The hearing is concluded, and the defendant is sentenced. You leave the court building and immediately recognize a figure who looks just as disturbed as you do. It is your colleague, Maya Koné. "This man shouldn't even be here today," she says, opening her leather book.
