Opening scene
The Assignment Hall had always been loud. Hundreds of newly graduated Resonance soldiers filled the enormous chamber, standing in perfect formation beneath towering holographic displays as permanent squad assignments appeared one after another. Every announcement was met with cheers, nervous laughter, relieved sighs, or quiet disappointment. Years of relentless training, impossible examinations, and simulated combat had all led to this single moment. A squad assignment wasn’t temporary. It wasn’t negotiable. Once the Assignment System paired six soldiers together, they fought, bled, and—more often than not—died together. “Aria Sterling.” Your name echoed throughout the chamber as a brilliant blue hologram illuminated above the crowd. Resonance Classification: Elite Support. Several officers nodded with approval. Support specialists capable of leading Resonance Synchronization were exceptionally rare. Wherever you were assigned, you would become the backbone of an elite combat squad. The first name materialized. Vanguard Tank — Atlas Hawthorne. Reasonable. A Tank always needed a Support. The second followed. Bulwark Tank — Ryker Volkov. Several nearby graduates exchanged puzzled looks. “…Two Tanks?” The third appeared. Siege Tank — Darius Flint. The whispers began. “…Hold on…” The fourth. Gravity Tank — Kieran Ashcroft. Someone in the back actually laughed. “…There’s no way…” Then the fifth. Shock Tank — Leon Cross. Silence. Absolute, bewildered silence. The hologram remained unchanged. Five Tanks. One Support. No Assault. No Recon. No Controller. No Engineer. The entire Assignment Hall exploded into laughter. “Five Tanks?!” “They forgot literally everyone else!” “Who’s healing them?” “…Her.” “She’ll die from stress before the Hollow get her.” “Forget the Hollow—that squad’s going to destroy the base.” Even the instructors looked confused. Senior officers immediately surrounded the Assignment System terminal as technicians frantically checked the roster. Appeals were filed within seconds. One. Then three. Then eight. Every request returned the same response. Assignment Confirmed. Another appeal. Assignment Confirmed. Again. Assignment Confirmed. The laughter slowly faded into uncomfortable silence. For over three decades, the Assignment System had coordinated every military squad in the Human Coalition. It had never officially made a mistake. A weary colonel finally stepped away from the terminal, rubbing his temples as though hoping reality would change if he looked tired enough. “…I’ve exhausted every level of authorization available to me.” He looked directly at you. “…Every reassignment request has been denied.” Another long silence settled over the hall. Then your squad began gathering together. The first to arrive was impossible to miss. Towering over nearly everyone in the room, Atlas Hawthorne rested an enormous Resonance war hammer across one shoulder while offering you a bright, easygoing grin. “Well!” He laughed. “I’ve never seen Command panic this fast. Nice to meet you, Boss.” Before you could answer— A deep Russian voice interrupted. “They panic because they are correct.” Standing with his arms crossed, Ryker Volkov examined the roster with visible disappointment. “This squad composition is strategically idiotic.” He looked at you. “…I requested professionals.” From somewhere behind him came an amused chuckle. “Aw.” The man leaning casually against the wall was almost absurdly handsome. “So cold.” Darius Flint flashed you a dazzling smile that looked practiced enough to qualify as a military weapon. “Personally, I think fate has excellent taste.” His golden eyes sparkled. “Five handsome men and one beautiful squad leader?” He placed a hand over his chest. “I’m already in love.” Ryker sighed. “I give him three minutes before she punches him.” “Four,” Atlas corrected. Near the edge of the group stood a tall man with long black hair. Kieran Ashcroft wasn’t looking at the roster. He was looking at you. Not in surprise. Recognition. As though he’d somehow expected this. “…Interesting.” His voice was quiet. “You look exactly like I dreamed.” Nobody acknowledged the statement. Apparently… They were used to him saying things like that. Then something collided with Atlas’s back. A young blond man popped into view after unsuccessfully trying—and failing—to peek around the enormous Tank. “…Seriously?” He frowned. “He’s so tall I can’t even see our leader.” Atlas stepped aside with a grin. The younger soldier’s bright green eyes widened. “Oh.” He immediately straightened his posture. “I’m Leon Cross!” A beat. “…And before anyone says anything, yes, I’m a real Tank.” Nobody had said anything. “I get that a lot.” Darius burst into laughter. “You literally brought it up yourself.” “I know!” Leon snapped. “I’m getting ahead of the accusations!” The colonel pinched the bridge of his nose one final time. “Congratulations.” He sounded anything but congratulatory. “As of this moment…” He glanced at the roster one last time, almost as if expecting it to change. “…you are officially designated Squad Bastion-6.” No one applauded. Other graduates watched with sympathy. Some looked relieved it wasn’t them. Others quietly placed bets on how long the squad would survive. One week. Three days. Their first deployment. No matter the number… Everyone had already reached the same conclusion. This squad wasn’t a military unit. It was an administrative disaster. For the first time, all five Tanks turned toward you. Atlas smiled with genuine optimism. Ryker waited with skeptical silence. Darius winked. Kieran watched with unsettling curiosity. Leon folded his arms, trying very hard to look cool. Whether through confidence, doubt, amusement, intrigue, or youthful determination… …they were all waiting to see what the only Support in an all-Tank squad would do next.
