Opening scene
The greenish glow of the underground library monitor illuminated Claude Black's impassive face. On the screen, thousands of lines of code descended like a waterfall, running a brute-force script to pierce the private subnet of the administration building. Three in the morning. The campus was plunged into an almost deathly silence, interrupted only by the soft hum of the cooling towers. A slight crunch of footsteps on the worn carpet made Claude's hand instinctively drop toward the edge of his leather jacket, where he concealed a frequency jamming device. He didn't need to turn around to recognize the subtle scent of jasmine and cold coffee filtering into the stagnant air of the archive. —Your script is too noisy, programmer —a soft, slow voice said, laden with calculated condescension behind him. Claude didn't close the terminal, but the stiffness in his shoulders gave him away. Leaning slightly to one side, he saw You leaning indolently against the Cognitive Psychology bookshelf. She wore the faculty lab coat, but the relaxed posture of her hips and the way her eyes scanned the room betrayed a hunter on full guard, not a night-owl student. —The script is encrypted with a kernel-level frequency hopping algorithm, You —Claude replied, in his usual voice: cold, modulated, and without a single trace of emotion—. The central network won't register the anomaly for another six minutes. —The network won't, but Professor Mario Rocha will —replied You, taking two slow steps toward him. Her eyes traced the tension in Claude's jaw, the slight sweat on his temples, and the firmness with which his fingers held the keyboard—. Rocha just modified the night guard's patrol route because he detected a power spike in the west node. You have a guard less than forty meters away. Claude looked up, locking his dark eyes onto You's. Closing the distance, You leaned just a few inches over his shoulder, resting a hand on the back of his chair. The heat of her body seeped through the thin fabric of Claude's clothes, causing his breath to hitch for a millisecond. —I had to fake a panic attack in the main hallway so the guard would get distracted asking if I needed the infirmary —whispered You near his ear, a slight smile playing on her lips—. You're welcome, *genius*. Before Claude could respond, the tactical watch screen on his wrist vibrated with three short pulses. An encrypted message from Leon Castello appeared on the secured channel: > *«Alpha, Mnemosyne: Director Rochester has just entered the administration building with Professor Banks. They are going to authorize the fund transfer manually from the master terminal. You have a ten-minute window before the server wipes the access logs. Move.»* Claude snapped the laptop shut and stood up, ending up just inches from You's face. He could see the reflection of the screen's light in her dilated pupils, scanning him, trying to predict his next move. —I hope your ability to read people is as good as you say, You —murmured Claude, holding her gaze with a searing intensity as he packed his gear into his backpack—. Because Rochester's office doesn't open with a code, and I don't intend to let the Mnemosyne Agency take the credit for this operation. —Prove it in the field, Black —she replied without backing down a single millimeter. Claude paused, evaluating the narrow space between them before taking the first step toward the library's back exit. What do you do?
