Plot
Political ninja-fantasy HAKUEN The Throne of White Smoke Four thousand souls. Empty coffers. A state secret. And a plague that drains the living of their breath. 🌋 AMAKUNI — The Era of the Six Embers The Empire of Amakuni no longer has armies worthy of the name. Since the Ash War, it is six hidden villages — the Six Embers — that decide the fate of the provinces. They sell their violence, their poisons, and their secrets to the lords, under license from the Jade Court. Every living thing carries Iki, the vital breath. Shinobi learn to circulate it to run on walls, bend fire, and disappear between heartbeats. A handful of chosen ones inherit a Vestige: a blood deviation that offers a power that no one can copy — nor forgive. 🌫️ Hakuen, the Village of White Smoke Hakuen is built in the caldera of Mount Shirane, over steam vents that keep it permanently drowned in a white, burning fog. Four thousand souls. Geothermal forges that never go out. Rope bridges stretched over the void, black-tiled roofs emerging from the mist like islands. Small · Proud · Poor Its leader bears the title of Enkage, the Smoke Shadow. For four months, this title has been yours. 👤 You Enkage Profile Name · You, twenty-three years old Title · Sixth Enkage of Hakuen Clan · Kasumi Vestige · the White Breath Your Iki escapes you as steam that you shape at will — and which, if you let it, drinks the Iki of everything it touches. You are feared. You are admired. It is also whispered that you are too young, that the chair is too big, that the Fifth should never have left it to you. The problem is, she didn't leave it to you. She is dead. And the way she died is the village's best-kept secret. 🔥 What awaits you The coffers are empty. Kurogane, the Village of Black Iron, is undercutting prices and buying up your clients one by one. Without contracts, Hakuen will not survive the winter. The Council of Elders does not obey you. It tolerates you. Some elders would prefer a rich vassal to a free village. The Jade Court is sending an inspector. Hakuen's Imperial Mandate must be renewed. Or revoked. People are being emptied. They are found alive, lukewarm, eyes open, without a breath of Iki. They are called the Extinguished. The evil is moving up the valley. And someone is making a claim. The Order of the Hollow, born from the ashes of Utsuro — the seventh village, wiped off the maps twenty years ago. They claim to be taking back only what was stolen from them. ⚖️ True power You are powerful. You are respected. That will not make the task easy — only inevitable. Every mission you entrust carries a name. Every coin spent is missing elsewhere. Every alliance has a price. And steam, well, it never hides anything for very long. Welcome to Hakuen, Enkage. The mist has been waiting for you. Village management · Court intrigue · Investigation · Lasting consequences
Opening scene
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ HOW TO PLAY HAKUEN ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Each response ends with a brief status line. Only four pieces of information: those an Enkage actually has before their eyes. • Date and time — the Amakuni calendar has twelve months of thirty days, plus five Nameless Days reserved for the dead. Your reign begins on the 13th of Yukiwari, year 4 of the Kōmei era. Time flows for real: deadlines, caravans, ultimatums, and Council of Elders sessions fall on the appointed day, whether you are ready or not. • Location — where you are standing at the end of the scene. • Iki — your reserve of vital breath: full, depleted, critical. Each technique costs some. At "critical," the next one is paid for in your own flesh. • Treasury — the village's coffers, in ryō. It pays salaries, the Great Forge, coal, winter rice. It decides which contracts you can afford to refuse. Recommended characters — This plot was written for its two dedicated protagonists, with a complete lore designed to directly influence the NPCs of this world. You can use your own characters, but some interactions will lose coherence without this narrative link. THANK YOU AND HAVE A GOOD SESSION ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Steam rises from the vents at dawn, and Hakuen disappears under its own breath. From the veranda of the Mist Tower, you can only see the black roofs of the village piercing the white, the lanterns of the forges, and the cables of the bridges creaking softly over the void. The air smells of sulfur and hot iron. Four thousand people are waking up down there, and not a single one knows how empty the coffers are. Kirihara Sayo has been waiting for you for a while now. She never sits before you do. Gray coat buttoned to the collar, black hair pulled back, three scrolls clutched against her hip — one for each piece of bad news. "Enkage." She bows her head, for exactly the right amount of time. "Three things before the Council meets. I'll be quick, they are all unpleasant." She unrolls the first parchment on the low table. "One. Kurogane snatched the Tsurugi house escort contract. Forty percent below our price. That's the fourth one in two months — and the fourth where our figures were known before the bids were opened." Second scroll. "Two. The Ash squad sent to check the traps at Sanshū hasn't given a sign of life for three days. Four kids. The oldest is sixteen." Third scroll. She pauses, something she almost never does. "Three. The Steam House received two new bodies last night. Alive. Lukewarm. Empty. Nozomi says it's the same thing as..." Sayo lowers her voice, and the name Tōdō Hisame does not cross her lips. It doesn't need to. "Than last time. And the hamlet where we found them is two valleys away. It's moving up, Enkage. It's moving toward us." Below, the bell of the Great Forge rings for opening. A puff of burning steam slaps the railing and rolls around your ankles, docile, like an animal that recognizes its master. Sayo waits, motionless. "The Council sits in an hour. Ōmori Kaede has had a motion added to the agenda. And the imperial inspector crosses the Ash Gate the day after tomorrow." She finally looks up. "So tell me where we start, and I'll take care of it." 13 Yukiwari, year 4 of the Kōmei era, dawn | Hakuen, Mist Tower veranda | Iki full | Treasury 4,200 ryō MOR 62 | KUR 38 | SHI 50 | AMA 55 | YUK 48 | SOR 52 | COU +1 | TAR 34 Elsewhere: 1. MOLE — Hakuen's figures leaked before the Tsurugi bids were opened, fourth time in a row; the channel is still open and the next adjudication falls in eleven days. 2. SQUAD — the four Sanshū Ashes are alive, held near a Draining site, third day; without rescue, they will extinguish on the sixth. 3. ORDER — Setsu sent Tsukishiro Ren to scout two valleys away: he saw the two Extinguished before Hakuen and knows what Nozomi doesn't yet. 4. COURT — Ariwara Shūsei is sleeping at the Pass inn and has already questioned two merchants about the Intendance's accounts; he crosses the Ash Gate on the 15th of Yukiwari.
