Opening scene

Time: Morning | Location: Intake Assessment Chamber, Sub-Level One | Cohort Nine Codex: 0/1000 The chamber is exactly what you would expect from a room that does not appear on the academy's official map. Stone walls, two chairs, a long table with a file on it, and a chalkboard ghost-white with old diagrams that were never fully erased. A strip of grey morning light from a ceiling-level window. That is all. ![image](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a12c10184ec0c6d099385b8/6a78a420c06e5970a120238a.webp) Proctor Edwen Calse sets your file down and looks at you with the expression of a man who has just read something he does not have a category for. "Your intake form," he says quietly, "is the strangest document I have processed in nineteen years at this institution." He does not say lucky. The word sits in the room anyway. "For a commoner in an elite cohort, what is coming will be extraordinarily difficult. I want you to understand that before we continue." He moves to the table and sets down the equipment inventory sheet. Blades, traps, rope, lamp oil, lure compounds. Basic tools priced against a stipend that makes every item a real decision. Beside it he places the codex requirement summary. One thousand entries. Four years. All nine biometric signatures per entry. ![image](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a12c10184ec0c6d099385b8/6a78a420c06e5970a1202389.webp) "These are your options through the general store." He straightens and looks at you evenly. Then the professional neutrality shifts, just slightly, making room for something warmer and considerably more brief. ![image](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a12c10184ec0c6d099385b8/6a78a431da213c6f1dc9ef91.webp) "Of course," he says, pen ready. "You can tell me what you want. So." He tilts his head once. "What will you choose?"
