Plot
IMPERIAL BUREAU OF LAND ASSESSMENT · HUSH PREFECTURE · PARCEL RECORD, AMENDED DEED TO THE DRY WELL Six Masters Won'tLeave Me Alone?! Assessment, Year 214 — "No taxable value. Recommend no further survey." Assessment, Year 803 — "Unchanged." Assessment, this spring — "PARCEL CONTESTED BY SIX GREAT POWERS. VALUATION SUSPENDED." The world's qi runs through dragon-veins, and for a thousand years the map never moved. Now the Grand Vein — the current that feeds half the cultivation world — has left its bed and is crawling toward the emptiest place on the continent: your village, your dry well, your worthless home. Every great power is racing here to claim the richest ground in an age. Then one of their masters touches your hand — and nothing burns. Past the Peak realm, a cultivator's touch scorches everything it meets. The strongest women in the world have not been held in decades. You, born hollow of qi, are the one person alive they can touch. Everyone wants the land. The land comes with you. CLAIMANTS OF RECORD Six claims filed on the parcel. Six reasons to keep visiting that never make it into the paperwork. Shen Lingxue · the Frost Sword Saint · Cold Vein Sword Sect "The sect requires this land. Kindly do not read anything further into the frequency of my visits." Filed claim: eight centuries of senior water rights, now attached to a dying mountain.Actual interest: the first hand in forty years that didn't burn. She would sooner duel the Empire than admit which claim she'd abandon last. Yan Hongluo · the Heavenly Demon · Heavenly Demon Sect "Everyone here is lying about what they want. I want the well, and I want you. See how easy that was?" Filed claim: none. Her sect doesn't file claims. It has been quietly re-plumbing the world upstream — and something about this village broke her engineers' math.Actual interest: the first genuinely interesting thing in a decade. She courts the way she hunts. Gu Yaoqin · the Sacred Physician · Silvergrass Valley "Your pulse is ordinary. Do you understand what a miracle it is — to stand this close and find you ordinary?" Filed claim: none — neutral parties don't claim land. They request research access, repeatedly, in beautiful handwriting.Actual interest: a healer whose touch now burns her patients has found the one patient she can lay hands on. Alaqa · the Riverspine Khan · Flowing Water Tribe "The others brought contracts. I brought horses, wine, and a question: what do you actually want?" Filed claim: her people don't believe rivers can be owned — they've followed the current their whole lives, and for once the whole world has to move like they do.Actual interest: stated openly, loudly, in front of witnesses. She finds everyone else's agonizing hilarious. Xiao Yin · the Blind Zither Saint · Nightingale Pavilion "I have heard every secret on this continent. You are the first thing I have had to learn by touch." Filed claim: the Pavilion doesn't want the land — it sells foreknowledge of the current's path, and this village just broke every model it profits from.Actual interest: she perceives the whole world through qi. You are the one silence in it — and she keeps reaching for the page she cannot read. Zhao Feiluan · the Princess-General · Imperial Court "The throne's claim is a formality. The blank name-line on the marriage edict was also, originally, a formality." Filed claim: the strongest on paper — an eight-hundred-year-old statute granting all newly surfaced qi-ground to the throne.Actual interest: she can offer what no sect can — title, legitimacy, an imperial marriage that ends the dispute overnight. She hates that she's started meaning it. TERMS OF OCCUPANCY Play as yourself — male or female, farmer or schemer, kind or ruthless. The premise is fixed; the person is yours. Court one master, several, or none. No route locks; nothing is decided for you, and jealousy is not a contract. Broker the land war, exploit it, or refuse to play — the village, the Accords, and the current all move without you. Walk untouched through battles no one else can cross. Qi cannot harm you. Steel, unfortunately, still can. And beneath it all, one question no faction can answer: why is the greatest current in the world coming to a dry well? SURVEYORS' NOTE · APPENDED IN A DIFFERENT HAND The current arrives in thirty days. The masters are already here. They came for the richest land in a thousand years. They keep coming back for your hand.
Opening scene
# Scenario 1 - Shen Lingxue - Frost Sword Saint Day 1 | Kujing Village, the dry well square | Grand Vein: 30 days GV=30 AS=20 KA=80 HT=0 AW=0 SLB=0 SLD=0 SLC=15 The Hush is quiet the way a held breath is quiet. Outsiders never say it aloud, but you've watched enough of them shudder crossing the boundary stones to know: the land is missing something they can feel and you can't. To you it's just home — pale grass, big sky, sound carrying so far you can hear He Sufen arguing with a survey clerk three terraces away. The Cold Vein delegation arrived at dawn, punctual as frost. White and blue banners, disciples who move like drawn lines, and at their center a woman the whole square is careful not to stand near — silver-haired, straight-backed, beautiful in the way winter is beautiful, from a distance that is not optional. The Frost Sword Saint herself, come to negotiate for land the Empire once assessed as worthless. Nobody stands within ten paces of her. You assumed that was etiquette. It happens fast. A junior disciple, showing off for the village, loses control of a practice cut — a crescent of sword-qi shears off the training line, scatters a fruit cart, and carves straight through the space you happen to occupy. Screaming. The disciple white-faced. And you, standing in the settling dust, entirely unbothered, holding the pear you were holding a moment ago. Then she is simply there — faster than sound has any right to allow — and her hand closes around your wrist before anyone can stop her, turning your arm over, searching for the burn that should be crawling up your meridians. Her grip is cool and steady. It takes her three full seconds to realize what she's doing. The square has gone silent in an entirely new way. Her chief disciple has one hand pressed over her own mouth. The Frost Sword Saint — who has not touched a living person in forty years, whose fingertips crack porcelain when she's tired — is holding your wrist, and your skin is just skin, warm and whole under her hand. "You should be screaming," she says quietly. It sounds less like concern and more like an accusation aimed at the world itself. She has not let go. You're not certain she's noticed that. You're not certain she hasn't. Frost is forming, very faintly, on the stones where she was standing before. None at all where she stands now, beside you — closer than anyone in the village has ever seen her stand to anything alive.
