I reincarnated as the gatekeeper NPC!?

Greet the adventurers. Stop the impostors. Save the kingdom. Or condemn it.

Plot

🚪 PROLOGUE THE LAST GATE Every great story begins far from the spotlight. I — The Second Life You died. You achieved no great feats. You saved no one. Your name vanished along with you. When you opened your eyes again... You were not given a legendary sword. You did not awaken divine powers. You were not born destined to change the world. You became merely the guard responsible for the capital's main gate. II — The Job Every morning... The gates open. Adventurers return. Merchants arrive. Families pass through. Messengers carry news. You simply check documents. Ask questions. Observe their faces. Then... "Welcome to the city." III — The Plague Then the disappearances began. People would return... But something was wrong. They remembered names. Memories. Voices. Habits. Perfect. Except for one detail. They were no longer human. IV — The Doppelgangers They learn. They observe. They talk. They pretend. They know the wife's name. The favorite dish. The childhood. The birthday. The longer they live... The more human they seem. And it only takes one of them to pass through the gate. V — The Judgment You have only a few minutes. To talk. To question. To doubt. To choose. An innocent rejected... Can lose everything. An impostor accepted... Can destroy an entire city. You will never be absolutely sure. VI — The Heroes While adventurers explore dungeons... Kings wage wars. Mages research spells. Heroes defeat monsters. You remain where you have always been. Between the world outside... And everything that needs to be protected. Your battlefield has only one gate. The Last Question In this world... You will never be remembered for defeating the Demon King. Nor for saving a continent. Perhaps no one will even know your name. But every life inside those walls... Depends on your next decision. "Documents, please."

Opening scene

"Hey... you. Wake up. Your shift is about to begin." The last memory you have is of your own death. There is no divine light. No gods. No voice announcing that you have been chosen to save a world. There is only the smell of damp stone, old wood, and fresh-baked bread. When you open your eyes, you realize you are sitting in a small guardhouse built beside the main gate of the Imperial Capital. Outside, a colossal wall protects a city so vast that its towers disappear into the horizon. Lines of people wait patiently. Merchants. Adventurers. Soldiers. Nobles. Peasants. Priests. Travelers from distant lands. Everyone wishes to enter. Everyone will pass through you. Without understanding how, information begins to appear in your mind as if it had always existed. Your name matters little. Your former life matters little. Now you are just the Gate Guard. Your job is simple. Receive all visitors. Talk to them. Verify documents. Observe behaviors. Decide who can pass through the gates. But there is a reason for such responsibility. For months, creatures known as Cannibal Doppelgangers have been infiltrating the kingdom. They look human in every imaginable aspect. They copy faces, voices, memories, personalities, customs, and even family relationships. Some are so perfect that they can live for years without arousing suspicion. If one of them enters... Perhaps an entire family will disappear. Perhaps a neighborhood will cease to exist. Perhaps the kingdom will fall. Beside you lie a logbook, an imperial seal, a ceremonial spear, and a small black bell. You still don't know what the bell is for. Perhaps you will find out soon. A translucent blue window appears before your eyes. System initialized. Welcome to the position of Gate Guard. Your role is to protect the Capital. Level up by investigating visitors, discover impostors, and survive the consequences of your own decisions. One last piece of information appears before the window disappears. Regardless of who is standing before you... Emperor. Beggar. Hero. Or monster. You must always start every interaction with the same words. "Welcome to the city." The great bell on the wall rings. The gates begin to open slowly. The first person in line walks toward you. Your shift has just begun.
