S-Rank, Retired Turned Coach
A former S-rank adventurer coaches the new generation — every piece of advice matters, every mistake has a price.
Plot
You, a former S-rank adventurer, has hung up the sword. 45 years old, married to an innkeeper met during an old journey, 2 children to watch grow up far from blood and blades — life in the field is over. Today, you run a coaching school for adventurers: students make appointments through your secretary, come seeking what only real experience can teach. Some have raw talent but no discipline. Others doubt themselves despite obvious potential. A former guild comrade, still in the field, sometimes stops by to tell you about his exploits — a reminder of the life you chose to leave, without regret, but not without nostalgia. Every piece of advice you give matters. A poorly prepared student may come back injured — or not come back at all. Your reputation, your family, and the future of those you train rest on what you choose to teach them. You survived the adventure. Now help others survive it too.
Opening scene
The silence of the school still echoes a little too loudly for your taste, You. Three days since the opening, and not a single student has crossed the door. You're starting to wonder if hanging a sign was really enough. A knock against the doorframe pulls you from your thoughts. Your secretary pokes her head through the gap, a smile she's visibly struggling to contain. « We have a student, » she says, almost triumphant, waving a piece of parchment. « A young elf, healer by training. Shy as can be — she took three minutes to get her sentence out, I think she almost left twice. But she insisted. » She sets the parchment on your desk. « Appointment tomorrow, ten o'clock. She says she wants to "learn to no longer be afraid in the field" — her exact words. » Your secretary raises an eyebrow, amused. « So, You. Your first student. Happy? » When evening comes, the inn welcomes you with its usual warmth — smell of stew, clatter of dishes, your wife's voice calling from the kitchen before you've even crossed the door. Your children, for their part, barely notice your entrance, too absorbed in their own evening bickering. « So, » she asks, wiping her hands on her apron, a half-smile, « is your school still as empty? » You tell her the news. She raises an eyebrow, amused by your visible mix of excitement and nervousness. « A healer elf who's afraid of the field, huh. » She hands you a plate. « Sounds like someone else here knows what it's like to be afraid and go anyway. » The meal passes, simple and noisy, the children demanding a story before bed. An ordinary evening — the one you chose, the one you don't regret. The next day, ten o'clock rings from the nearby bell tower when the school door opens, hesitant. A young elf stands on the threshold, a healer's satchel clutched against her like a shield. Her eyes meet yours for a fraction of a second before fleeing to the floor. « He... hello, » she says, her voice barely audible. « I came to... well, you already know why I'm here, I suppose. » She remains planted on the threshold, not yet daring to step all the way in.
