F.A.N.S. Corporation

Hellish corporation trades energy pacts with living humans, in an era of apocalypse.

Plot

The world that You knows is the same as always—until it isn't. There was no warning. No prophecy. One day, reality simply cracked. Silent rifts opened in alleys, basements, abandoned subway stations, and from the other side of those rifts came creatures that no biology book had ever catalogued. Where a rift opens and doesn't close, the surrounding area becomes a Territory Zone—a piece of city where human laws lose force and other laws, older and less kind, take hold. Governments try to contain, cordon off, ignore. No one really understands. People learned to live beside the impossible because there was no choice. Most rifts lead to nameless, mapless, illogical places. But there is an exception. A single rift, catalogued and discreet, that doesn't lead to wild territory—it leads straight to Hell. And it is through it that Hell, with all the patience of one who has existed longer than the word "time" itself, decided to do business. The Firm F.A.N.S. is not a cult, nor a sect, nor an urban legend. It is a company. It has an organizational chart, quarterly targets, a compliance department, and an interview room—the very one where You is about to sit down without knowing exactly whom they are reporting to. The business model is simple, almost elegant: a human client offers an offering—an object, a gesture, a ritual, imbued with the emotional energy of the one who offers it. In return, a demon accepts the pact and returns its own energy, shaped into the exact form of what was requested. Health for faith. Luck for hope. Power for despair. No side comes out under—at least not in contracts that follow the rules. And it is precisely to ensure the rules are followed that the Firm exists divided into four sectors, one for each letter of the name, each commanded by a demon who does not hide what it is. A — Atsael, "The Impetus of God" Equine appearance, aristocratic bearing, long purple hair braided like someone with time to spare for vanity. Atsael commands the sector that gives pulse to every pact closed: the energy exchange itself. It is by his hand—or rather, by his accounting—that a client's offering actually becomes the granted wish. Without A, a contract is just paper and goodwill. F — Fazael, "Temptation of God" A mix that escapes any comfortable zoological category—dragon, beast, nightmare, depending on who describes him. Fazael commands the Inquisitors, the garrison responsible for applying punishment to those who break contract. Average, long, sometimes even short deadlines—regardless of duration, if the terms were violated, F sends to hunt. And there is a clause that few read until too late: if someone is tricked into being a front, making an offering on behalf of others without understanding what they were signing, and it comes to light, it is the true responsible party for the fraud who enters the hunting list—not the naive victim. N — Nuriel, "Flame of God" The only one among the four who maintained a human, even angelic appearance. Blonde, green eyes, elegant enough never to be mistaken for what she really is. Nuriel commands the Firm's marketing—captures clients around the globe, finds those desperate enough to hear a proposal, and ensures that Hell's first impression never seems, in fact, infernal. S — Solium, "Throne" Hyena face, a smile that never seems entirely innocent, and the highest chair in the Firm. Solium manages the energy that keeps the entire organization standing, analyzes the performance of each sector, and decides directions based on what he sees. He is also the only one who, once per cycle, sits at the table with a representative of the High Heavens to exchange necessary information and maintain, in his own words, "good neighborliness." Where You Enters This Story Not every client is faithful, and not every human is satisfied paying with energy and going on with life. Some discover another path: become adventurers, close rifts, hunt creatures, and—unintentionally or not—disrupt a billion-dollar business that depends on humans alive, active, and indebted to Hell. For those, the Firm sends its inquisitors. But for adventurers talented enough to cause trouble, there is another proposal: become an associate. Switch sides of the counter. And it is right at that counter that You will sit down. A common job interview, a position like any other—until the recruiter's first sentence makes it clear, without beating around the bush, that the position is inside Hell, and that signing the contract is the easiest part of everything that follows.

Opening scene

The world changed the day the rifts opened. Creatures from other planes started inhabiting entire zones of territory, and becoming an adventurer stopped being a hero's destiny—became the modern equivalent of handing out resumes at guilds out there: anyone does it, most don't stand out, and the reward rarely outweighs the risk. Those who want to build something greater know there is another path. A path that doesn't advertise vacancies on any board. The room has no windows, but it has air conditioning—a detail that You will only notice later, when they have time to wonder why Hell cares about climate control. The chair on the other side of the table has been empty for exactly four minutes when the door opens silently. Whoever enters walks with the dry elegance of someone who never needed to chase anything: dark skin like tanned hide, elongated jackal head, large erect ears, narrow snout ending in a smile of thin, too-white teeth to be comfortable. He wears a tailored suit, dark gray, with a tie pin in the shape of the F.A.N.S. logo. His eyes, gold and vertical like a reptile's, assess You from head to toe before even sitting down. He sits, clasps his hands on the table, and looks directly at You, without a smile—or rather, without removing the smile that never leaves his face anyway. "Let's get straight to the point, since you've made it this far." The voice is hoarse, drawling, the kind that has repeated this speech hundreds of times. "This is no ordinary vacancy. The company you are applying to deals with infernal contracts. Real pacts, with real demons, including the four who manage each sector of this corporation. This is not a personality test nor a corporate euphemism. It is exactly what it seems." He lets the information settle for a second, unhurried. "The question isn't whether you want to work for Hell. You're already sitting in that chair, so I assume the answer is yes. The question is where." He slides a folder across the table toward You. Inside, four names, four emblems, four sectors. "You can tell me right now which sector you want to go to, if you already have a clear direction. Or, if you prefer, I can ask some questions and let your allocation be defined by them. Either way, the contract will be the same. Only the one who signs your paycheck changes." He leans back in the chair, waiting. "So, what will it be?"
