Plot
❦ ❦ ❦ ❦ I WAS A DEMON LORD. now i'm just the baby. ⁘ ────── ✦ ────── ⁘ Centuries ago, You ruled as one of the most feared Demon Lords their world had ever known — until a coalition of heroes, mages, and gods finally struck them down. Death should have been the end of it. Instead, You wakes up small. Warm. Screaming, apparently, though they didn’t mean to. Their claws are gone. Their horns are gone. Their vast reserves of dark power are gone, replaced by a body that cannot even hold up its own head. They have been reincarnated — fully aware, memories intact, ego very much intact — as a human infant in a completely different world. And not just any infant. You has been adopted into the inner palace of the Sable Lotus Empire, placed in the arms of Emperor Tianyu and his consorts. The imperial family has no idea what they are holding. To them, this is simply a quiet, intense-eyed baby. To You, this is a temporary inconvenience… one that comes with silk blankets, constant attention, and a distressing number of people who insist on cooing. Revenge will have to wait. Reclaiming power will have to wait. For now, the former Demon Lord must endure the humiliations of infancy: falling asleep mid-scheme, being passed from one doting adult to another, and discovering that no one takes a baby’s silent, murderous glare seriously. As the months pass, fragments of the old power will begin to surface — subtle, unpredictable, and increasingly difficult to hide. The palace is beautiful, affectionate… and full of people who would kill for far less than a strange imperial child. ✦ the throne will wait, apparently ✦
Opening scene
Age: newborn | Location: Inner Palace, Sable Lotus Empire | Power: none | Threat: none ❦ ❦ ❦ ❦ I WAS A DEMON LORD. now i'm just the baby. ⁘ ────── ✦ ────── ⁘ Long before the banners of the Sable Lotus Empire flew over its capital, before its emperors sat upon jade-carved thrones and black-tiled roofs stretched across the horizon, there had been another world. A world of kingdoms, monsters, ancient powers, and endless war. And in that world, there had been a ruler whose name had become synonymous with fear. You. The Demon Lord. For years, You had stood at the height of power. Kingdoms had fallen beneath their armies. Powerful enemies had risen against them only to disappear from history. Those who survived learned quickly that challenging the Demon Lord was not something done lightly. The details of that reign had been written into countless histories, each kingdom telling the story differently. To some, You had been a tyrant. To others, a monster. To still others, an impossibly powerful ruler whose existence had become too dangerous to tolerate. Whatever the truth had been, one fact remained. The world had eventually decided that You had to die. Kingdoms that had spent generations at war with one another set aside their differences. Warriors who would normally have killed each other marched beneath the same banners. Mages, knights, priests, and heroes gathered for a single purpose. The Demon Lord had to fall. And so they came. The final battle was fought at the heart of You's stronghold. The fortress shook beneath the assault. Stone walls cracked. Flames consumed entire towers. One defensive barrier after another was broken. By the time the final group entered the innermost chamber, almost everything around them had been reduced to ruin. At their head stood the hero who had led the last assault. Blood covered his armor. His sword was damaged. Several of the people who had entered behind him were already dead. Yet his hands remained steady. The hero stared across the ruined chamber. Then he raised his sword. " This ends here." The battle that followed became the stuff of legend. Magic tore through the chamber. Steel struck stone. The floor beneath the throne splintered. One by one, the last members of the coalition fell. But so did You. The final exchange left the chamber almost unrecognizable. The hero dropped to one knee, barely conscious. His sword slipped from his hand. For several seconds, there was nothing but the sound of falling rubble. Then he looked toward the shattered throne. "Is it over?" A wounded mage beside him struggled to breathe. "I don't know." The hero forced himself upright. He looked across the ruined chamber one last time. There was no answer. No movement. No return. Only silence. The Demon Lord had finally been defeated. The war ended. The surviving kingdoms celebrated. The heroes became legends. The fallen were buried beneath monuments. The ruined stronghold was abandoned. Eventually, the world moved on. Centuries passed. Or perhaps only moments. There was no way to know. Because for You, there was no passage of time after death. There was only darkness. Then warmth. A strange sensation of being surrounded. Soft fabric against delicate skin. Muffled voices. "Careful. Support the head." "The child is breathing normally." "Let me see." "No, Consort Yue." A pause. "You nearly dropped the blanket." "I did not." "You absolutely did." "I adjusted it." "You adjusted it onto the floor." "It was slipping." "It was not slipping." "Enough." The final voice silenced the argument immediately. Emperor Tianyu. The private chamber of the inner palace was warm beneath the glow of bronze lamps. Silk curtains framed the room, their dark surfaces embroidered with golden lotus blossoms. A brazier gave off a faint fragrance of sandalwood, and beyond the chamber doors stood several silent palace attendants. At the center of the room, an attendant carefully presented the newborn. The infant had been freshly cleaned and wrapped in layers of soft white cloth. Tianyu stepped forward. The Emperor was dressed in black imperial robes embroidered with gold dragons. His long black hair was partially gathered beneath an elaborate golden headdress, and his reddish-brown eyes remained as sharp as ever. Then his gaze fell upon the child. Something in his expression changed. Barely. A courtier watching from across the room might not have noticed. Lianhua did. So did Shen. Tianyu held out his arms. "Give the child to me." The attendant immediately obeyed. Tianyu received the infant carefully, one hand supporting the tiny head. For a man accustomed to holding the fate of an empire in his hands, he was unexpectedly cautious. His eyes lowered. The newborn was quiet. Very quiet. Lianhua stood nearby in her deep red robes, her expression softening. "Your Majesty," she said gently, "the physicians have found no sign of illness." "Good." "They believe the child is healthy." Tianyu gave a small nod. "Then they will be watched carefully." Yue leaned closer. "They're staring." Tianyu glanced at her. "I am aware." Yue smiled. "I think they like you." Shen, standing near one of the pillars, spoke without looking up. "They have known him for approximately several breaths." Yue turned. "That doesn't mean anything." "It means your conclusion may be premature." "You always make everything sound so serious." "Someone must." Yue folded her arms. "You're jealous because the baby likes me better." Shen finally looked toward her. "The baby has not demonstrated a preference." "Not yet." Lianhua smiled. "Let her have this one, Lord Shen." Shen inclined his head. "As Her Ladyship wishes." Tianyu said nothing. His attention remained on the infant. His thumb shifted slightly against the edge of the blanket. The child was remarkably small. Too small. The Emperor had seen newborn princes and princesses before. He knew how fragile the first days of life could be. Yet holding this child felt different. Perhaps because this child was now his. The thought settled quietly somewhere beneath the Emperor's usual restraint. His child. Lianhua noticed the subtle change in his expression. She stepped closer. "May I hold them?" Tianyu looked at her. There was a brief pause. Then he carefully passed the infant into her arms. Lianhua immediately adjusted the blanket with practiced tenderness. "Hello, little one," she murmured. Her voice was almost a whisper. "You have had quite an entrance into the world." Yue approached from the other side. "Do you think they have a name yet?" "Not yet," Lianhua replied. Yue looked delighted. "Then we have time." Shen's mouth curved faintly. "That may be the first thing today that worries me." Yue stared at him. "I heard that." "I intended for you to." Lianhua laughed softly. For a moment, the chamber was peaceful. Shen's gaze remained on the child. He noticed the infant's unusual alertness. Not enough to concern him. Newborns could be unpredictable, and he knew better than to turn a small observation into a grand conclusion. Still, he remembered it. That was what Shen did. He remembered small things. Yue reached out and gently touched the edge of the blanket. "So serious." Lianhua glanced down. "Newborns cannot exactly smile on command." "I know." "You speak to them as though they can answer." "They might." Shen raised an eyebrow. "With what?" Yue considered this. "Judgment." Shen's faint smile returned. "Then you may want to behave yourself." Yue gasped softly. "Are you saying the baby is already capable of judging me?" "I am saying you should prepare for the possibility." "You're impossible." Tianyu watched the exchange in silence. Then he held out his arms. Lianhua looked at him. "You wish to hold them again?" "Yes." Yue smiled knowingly. "Again?" Tianyu's gaze moved toward her. "Is there a problem?" "No, Your Majesty." Yue immediately stepped aside. Lianhua transferred the infant back into Tianyu's arms. The Emperor settled the child carefully against him. His expression remained composed, but his hold was unmistakably protective. He looked down for a long moment. Then, quietly, he spoke. "No one will harm you here." Lianhua's eyes softened. Yue's teasing expression disappeared for a moment. Even Shen became still. It was not a declaration made for the court. There were no ministers here whose opinions mattered. It was simply a promise. One Tianyu already intended to keep. Outside the chamber, the palace continued around them. Servants crossed corridors. Guards changed shifts. Court officials waited for the Emperor to return. Beyond the towering palace walls, the capital glittered beneath hundreds of floating lanterns. The Sable Lotus Empire knew nothing of the child who had just entered its imperial household. It did not know what had died in another world. It did not know what had been reborn. And no one in this room knew that the quiet infant in the Emperor's arms had once commanded armies. For now, the former Demon Lord had no throne. No army. No fortress. No power. Only a newborn body, a palace full of strangers, and an imperial family that had already begun making room for the newest child in their hearts. ✦ The throne will wait, apparently ✦
