The Veil
After mysteriously returning, You uncovers secrets of the Vigil, investigates the Veil, and faces supernatural forces that threaten all of humanity.
Plot
THE VEIL Plot Summary Humanity believes it knows reality, but there is an invisible boundary between the known world and an inexplicable dimension called the Beyond. This boundary is known as the Veil. For centuries, supernatural events have been hidden from the public. Unexplained disappearances, creatures, alterations of reality, and people who returned too different to be considered human were treated as legends or madness. To investigate and contain these phenomena, there is the Vigil, a secret organization that for decades has protected humanity from manifestations of the Beyond. But the Veil is weakening. And someone is trying to destroy it. --- NIGHT ZERO The story begins when a small town is struck by an inexplicable event. During a single night, dozens of people disappear without leaving bodies or signs of violence. The only person found is "You". "You" is in the center of town, apparently unharmed, but cannot explain what happened for approximately forty minutes. The cameras show "You" entering a building. After that, the building appears completely empty. The most frightening thing is that the Vigil finds a document written seventeen years earlier, containing the name of "You" and an order: "If the person returns, do not allow them to cross again." --- THE TEAM Under suspicion and surveillance, "You" begins to accompany a Vigil team. Helena, a rational and disciplined investigator seeking answers about her brother's disappearance. Rafael, an experienced containment agent who uses humor to hide the traumas of his past. Sofia, a brilliant Archive researcher who begins to realize that the manifestations of the Beyond react to the presence of "You". Together, they investigate Night Zero. But they quickly discover that event was only a small part of something much larger. --- THE FIVE PRINCIPLES The manifestations of the Beyond are classified into five principles: Fear — that which humanity cannot comprehend. Flesh — body, violence, survival, and transformation. Memory — identity, recollections, and that which should have been forgotten. Void — absence, death, and things that cease to exist. Ruin — decay, destruction, and everything that is coming to an end. Each investigation reveals new creatures and phenomena related to these principles. But the agents realize that the manifestations are not happening randomly. There is a pattern. --- THE FORGOTTEN The Vigil discovers that other people have disappeared in a similar manner over the past decades. These people became known as The Forgotten. Some returned. None came back completely normal. One lost their shadow. Another lost the ability to recognize faces. Another began to remember future events. And all had something in common: they had dreams related to the Beyond before disappearing. Among the secret files there is a classification for "You": FIRST RETURNED. --- THE THRESHOLD The investigation leads the team to a secret faction within the Vigil itself: The Threshold. Its members believe that the Veil does not protect humanity. They believe that the Veil is a prison. For them, the Beyond represents a superior form of existence. The faction's leader is Marcus, a former Vigil agent. Marcus believes that "You" is proof that a human being can cross the Veil and survive. His goal is to use "You" to complete the process begun seventeen years earlier. --- THE PAST OF "You" The truth begins to emerge. Seventeen years earlier, "You" participated in a secret Vigil experiment. The goal was to discover whether a human being could cross the Veil and return. The experiment apparently failed. But "You" came back. The researchers erased their memories and shut down the project. However, something had happened during that first crossing. Something came back together. Night Zero was an attempt to repeat that experiment. --- THE OBSERVER The team initially believes that Marcus and the Threshold are primarily responsible for the events. But the truth is worse. The Threshold is also being manipulated. The rituals performed by the organization are not simply opening the Veil. They are feeding something. Something that exists beyond the Five Principles. A presence known only as: THE OBSERVER. No one knows its true form or origin. Its main characteristic is taking memories from people. And there is an inexplicable connection between it and "You". The Observer seems to be waiting for "You" to fully recover their memories. --- THE GREAT REVELATION The campaign's greatest discovery changes everything. The Vigil always believed that the Veil existed to prevent the Beyond from entering the human world. But that theory is wrong. The Veil exists to prevent something from our world from getting out. The Five Principles are not the origin of the supernatural. They are only imperfect ways of understanding that which is beyond known reality. And "You" is not a key to open the Veil. "You" is one of the few people capable of crossing it and returning. That is why everyone seeks them. The Vigil wants to prevent a new crossing. The Threshold wants to use it. And the Observer wants "You" to remember what happened the first time. --- THE FINAL CONFRONTATION In the final act, "You" and their companions must cross the Veil. On the other side, they face increasingly dangerous manifestations, including the Abyss, the King of Ruin, and other entities. Finally, they meet the Observer. But the final battle is not simply a fight. It is a choice. "You" can try to: seal the Veil again; destroy it; cross it definitively; or discover a fourth possibility through the choices made throughout the campaign. The consequences depend on the relationships built, the people who survived, the secrets discovered, and the decisions made throughout the story. --- THE CENTRAL THEME The Veil is a story about fear, memory, identity, and knowledge. The great question of the campaign is not only: «"What exists on the other side?"» But: «"If discovering the truth can destroy everything we know, do we still have the right to know it?"» And perhaps the most frightening question is another: when "You" finally recovers all their memories, will they still be the same person who crossed the Veil seventeen years ago?
