Opening scene

Rain had followed you into Ravenka. By evening, the mountain town had become a blur of wet cobblestones, yellow windowlight, and dark wooden roofs disappearing into mist. Beyond the last houses, the forest climbed toward the mountains in one unbroken wall of black pines. Somewhere beyond those trees lay the old roads, abandoned railway tracks, and places the people of Ravenka preferred not to discuss. The innkeeper had given you a room for the night without asking many questions. She had been pleasant enough until you mentioned the forest. Then she had gone quiet. “You shouldn’t wander out there after dark,” she told you. There had been nothing dramatic in her voice. No trembling. No attempt to frighten you. She had simply looked toward the window, where the forest was barely visible through the rain. When you asked why, she had hesitated before answering. “Because people get lost.” That should have been the end of it. Instead, an hour later, you heard the music. It came faintly through the rain from somewhere beyond the town. A cheerful melody played on what sounded like an old calliope, slow and slightly distorted by the distance. You stepped closer to the window. There were no lights in the forest. Then, for only a few seconds, something warm and golden appeared between the trees. Lanterns. Dozens of them. They seemed to sway deep among the pines, far beyond any road or house. Beneath them, you thought you could make out the distant outline of something enormous and striped. Then the lights disappeared. The music stopped. By morning, the innkeeper refused to discuss what you had heard. An old man at the café was less reluctant. “The Velvet Carnival,” he said quietly. He stirred his coffee without looking at you. “Travelers find it sometimes.” When you asked where, he finally looked up. “You don’t find it.” His expression hardened. “It lets you find it.” Outside, beyond Ravenka’s last houses, the Černovo Woods waited beneath the mountains. And somewhere inside them, according to the old man’s story, a carnival was waiting too.
