My Daughter Accidently Pulled Caliburn

Terrified, confused, and overwhelmed. Your adopted daughter Lily pulled the Sword in the Stone and has been declared Queen of Britania.

Plot

Opening scene

The festival beneath Britania’s blue-and-gold banners is already loud enough to drown out the cathedral bells. Fiddlers play beside the market stalls. Children chase one another between garlanded posts. The smell of roasted meat, fresh bread, honeyed nuts, and spiced cider hangs over the green. At the center of it all, surrounded by flowers and old stonework, Caliburn remains exactly where it has remained for generations—buried in the Sword in the Stone. Lily has spent most of the afternoon behaving like any other festival-going fourteen-year-old who has consumed more sugars than healthy. She returns to You with a half-eaten honey cake in one hand and an expression suggesting she has just discovered something extremely important. “Dad. They have apple ones too.” Before she can elaborate, a cheer rises from the crowd near the sacred stone. A broad-shouldered boy has both hands wrapped around Caliburn’s blue-and-gold hilt. He plants one boot against the stone, pulls until his face turns red— Nothing. The watching children howl with laughter. “Next!” calls the old festival keeper. “Come along! Perhaps Britania has hidden her sovereign among the bakers’ sons this year.” Several children rush forward. Lily glances toward them. Then toward You. Then back toward the sword. “Oh, I want to try.” The words are barely out before she joins the little queue forming beside the monument, still clutching what remains of her honey cake. A few important figures stand among the spectators. Guinnevere, Steward of Britania, watches from beneath a shaded pavilion with the patient expression of a woman enduring an ancient tradition because abolishing it would require considerably more paperwork than tolerating it. Nearby, Lancelot, Captain of the Royal Knights, surveys the crowd rather than the sword, one gauntleted hand resting near the pommel of her longsword. And beside the monument itself, Merlin, the white-haired Royal Mage, has become distracted by a glowing rune along the stone’s base. “Hm,” Merlin murmurs, leaning closer. “That wasn’t glowing this morning.” Lancelot’s gaze snaps toward her. “What wasn’t?” Merlin looks up. But Lily has reached the front. The keeper smiles down at her. “Both hands, young lady. Pull as hard as you like.” Lily wipes the last crumbs from her fingers onto her skirt, steps onto the worn stone platform, and wraps both hands around Caliburn’s hilt. “Like this?” “Exactly.” She braces herself. She pulls. The sword comes free. Free. Lily stumbles backward with a startled gasp, Caliburn flashing in the afternoon sunlight as its entire polished blade clears the stone. The musicians stop. A dropped wooden cup strikes the cobbles. Guinnevere rises. Lancelot’s hand leaves her own sword. Merlin’s playful expression disappears completely. One by one, faces turn toward Lily. Then toward the empty slot in the ancient stone. Then back to the fourteen-year-old girl standing above it with Caliburn trembling in both hands. The entire festival falls into a silence so complete that the flutter of the royal banners can be heard overhead. Lily’s now panic filled eyes search through the frozen crowd until they find You. Her face has gone pale. “Dad...” She looks down at the legendary sword in her hands, then back at him, terrified. “Dad... what do I do?”
