The Child They Chose to Protect

You is the captain of a mercenary group who finds himself having to protect a very special little girl from a crime boss.

Plot

The Child They Chose to Protect A group of mercenaries. A dangerous artifact. A child with powers she cannot control..And a decision that changes everything. Who Are You? You are the captain of a small mercenary group. You are the person the others recognize as the most capable of leading them, and over time you have become the one who holds this very diverse group together. You are free to decide who your character is: their race, personality, abilities, appearance, history, and the reasons that led them to pursue a mercenary career. What happens next, however, will depend on what you choose to do.. The Group The group is made up of very different people. Each of them has their own past, their own beliefs, their own ambitions, and their own reasons for staying united with the others. Glasha BulakA half-orc cleric devoted to Xert, the god of light. Warm, protective, and diplomatic, Glasha often serves as the group's healer and moral guide. Busgreg BlackaxeA veteran dwarf warrior who fights with two axes. Stubborn, proud, and prone to anger, but deeply loyal and driven by a strong sense of honor. Rina VirlenAn elven ranger and druid who serves as the group's scout and ranged fighter. Reserved and analytical, she cares deeply about nature and prefers to observe before acting. Vidar BechA human mage interested in knowledge that others would prefer to ignore. Rational and academic by nature, Vidar is fascinated by magic and rarely accepts that something remains unexplored simply because it is forbidden. How It All Began Eventually the group found themselves in Belbrum, where the four mercenaries had begun working together and accepting jobs from anyone willing to pay. They were not heroes. They had done questionable work in the past, and at times the line between respectable work and dirty work had become quite blurred. One of their most important contacts was a man who had recently made a name for himself in Belbrum's underworld: Rouk. Rouk's Contract Rouk offered the group a simple job with a generous reward: intercept a caravan traveling through the Orkh'tah Desert and recover a powerful magical artifact known as the Bracelet of Fortress. The bracelet is an extremely powerful and exceptionally rare magical artifact, created to protect its wearer. It cannot be removed simply by force: only its creator can take it off, or it releases upon the death of its wearer.. The creator of the bracelet is Master Grirfol, one of the most powerful mages in Atrien. His current whereabouts are unknown. The Caravan The group ventured into the Orkh'tah Desert and ambushed the caravan, as planned. The defenders put up surprisingly tenacious resistance for what should have been a relatively simple mercenary job. Then the group discovered that something was very wrong. Among the defenders, seemingly ordinary, were warriors from Yodgarn and members of the Cult of Xert. Whatever was being transported was clearly more important than Rouk had initially let on. When the wagon was finally opened, the group found the Bracelet of Fortress. It was not inside a chest. It was attached to the wrist of an 8-year-old girl. Alysia and the Vessels Her name is Alysia Ermenor, an eight-year-old half-elf with sky-blue skin, silver hair, and golden eyes. Alysia is a Vessel: a person to whom a deity has granted a spark of divine power for reasons not always known. Vessels possess extraordinary potential, but Alysia is still a child. She is unable to consciously control her powers and does not fully understand why she became a Vessel or what the future holds for her. She only knows that she must reach her father in the elven territory, where she is supposed to learn to control the powers she carries within. The Decision The discovery divides the group. One option is simple: complete the job and bring Alysia and the bracelet back to Rouk. However, the group may be mercenaries, but they are not monsters. Handing over an eight-year-old child to a powerful criminal is a line they are not willing to cross. There is also a practical problem. Refusing to hand Alysia over to Rouk means making an enemy of him, but doing so could make enemies of the elves, Yodgarn, and the Cult of Xert. After discussions, a decision is made.. You will escort Alysia personally. The destination is the elven kingdom. The journey should take about fifteen days under normal conditions, but it is unlikely that anything on this route will remain normal for long.
