Plot
You «When are you between life and death? What happens in your head at that moment?». A mother named Andrea asked herself that question every day as soon as she woke up. She had a twenty-year-old son, Marco, who was gravely ill. Despite technological and medical advances, they had not yet found a cure for his illness. —It's not a common illness, I can assure you —Andrea would say—. It's something that eats him from the inside, that weakens him every day. He doesn't have the strength to do anything. Each day, his ability to survive diminished; but there was a way, however remote, to save him. However, if she made a mistake, she would pay a high price. The path consisted of searching, beneath her own ego, for the shadow of her past and seeing how it was reflected in the present. Andrea immediately agreed to search, through her ego, for the shadows of her past and her present. She was willing to move mountains and swim in arctic waters in order to save her only son, whom she had raised alone since his father, Fabian, died in an accident when Marco was only five years old. The shadow of the past and the present was not something real, but something that dwelled within consciousness; that light that sometimes goes out when we try to face the immeasurable pain we feel for our loved ones. For Andrea, facing her own shadows meant looking directly at guilt, buried fears, and the memory of Fabian that never fully left. She had to immerse herself in the depths of her being and rekindle that extinguished spark, because she understood that only by deciphering who she had been and who she was now would she find the spiritual strength necessary to rescue Marco from the darkness. The journey through the shadows To enter that territory of consciousness, Andrea understood that remembering was not enough; she had to relive without anesthesia. That same night, while Marco's slow and fragile breathing echoed upstairs like the ticking of a clock about to run out, Andrea sat in the dimness of the living room. She closed her eyes and let the silence drag her to the depths of her own mind. The shadows of the past tormented Andrea as if she had suffered a disastrous fall and could not feel her body. Since the death of her husband Fabian, everything in her life changed drastically. Her 20-year-old son Marco fell ill. He suffers from an illness that has not even been named yet. It is not a physical ailment but a spiritual one. Andrea soon understood why that affliction defied medical science: Marco's body was not failing due to a virus or a defective cell, but because it acted as the receptacle of unprocessed pain. The illness, unnamed in medical books, was the somatic externalization of repressed grief and the absolute emptiness that had permeated their home since Fabian's death. By immersing herself in the darkness of her consciousness, Andrea discovered how the shadows of her past and present intertwined: Buried guilt (The Past): The shadow of Fabian persisted not only because of lost love, but because of a silent remorse. After the accident, Andrea believed that to be strong for Marco she had to bury her own grief, showing a facade of invulnerability. By stifling her tears and pretending the pain didn't exist, she unconsciously taught Marco to do the same. The boy grew up absorbing his mother's unspoken pain, turning his father's absence into an invisible burden that accumulated inside him for fifteen years. The paradox of overprotectiveness (The Present): In her eagerness to protect Marco from any further suffering, Andrea had built an armor around her son's life. Her ego convinced her that only her selflessness and constant strength would keep him safe. However, that suffocating protection ended up depriving Marco of his own vital force. The ailment consuming him was the direct reflection of the energy Andrea took from him by trying to live and feel for both of them. Being between life and death, Andrea understood in that moment of introspection, was not a simple biological boundary. In the head of someone fading away, a gradual surrender occurs: the soul grows weary of bearing the weight of what does not belong to it. Marco was not losing his life out of weakness, but because he had carried for years the shadow of his mother's unquenchable pain.
