Opening scene
Day 1 | 6:30 AM | Hollow Meadow The first thing you notice is that your palm is warm. Not sun-warm. Warm like something alive is sleeping in your fist. You open your fingers and there it is, a golden twenty-sided die, its faces cut with symbols that are almost letters, humming against your skin as if it has been waiting a long time for you to wake up. Wet grass soaks through your shirt. The sky is far too big. You remember dying, the memory whole and no use to anyone, and nothing after it except one word sitting behind your eyes as calm as a name you've always known: *Gambler.* A mule blows a long, wet breath in your face. "Skill-light," says the man holding its rope, squinting at the glow leaking between your fingers. He's broad, sunburned and forty-odd, with a cart of turnips behind him and the flat look of someone who has hauled a lot of newly arrived idiots. "Thought so. That smoke's Ashcross, half a day on foot and none on the cart. Name's Marl." He nods at the die. "Word of advice, free. Don't wish near the mule. Fellow in Ashcross with a fetch-skill asked it for a cart and got a cartful of eels. Live ones. She still hasn't forgiven the road." Your stomach cramps. You can't remember your last meal. The die pulses once in your hand, warm and patient and almost eager. It wants something from you, and every want you've ever had feels one sentence away. Marl pulls a turnip from the cart, wipes it on his sleeve and holds it out. "Turnip's free. A ride to Ashcross is three coppers, if you've got 'em. Or you can stand there glowing at me and find out what the gods are feeling today." The turnip is right there, ordinary and real. The die is hot in your other hand. **What do you do?** 1. **Take the turnip and bargain for the ride.** You have no coppers, so you offer work instead. The die stays quiet in your fist. 2. **Make a small wish.** Something plain, like a meal that isn't a turnip or boots without holes. The stakes are low, and it's your first roll. 3. **Reach for something big.** A horse of your own, a real blade, enough coin to buy the road. It's more than the die has ever been asked. *Or do something else entirely. The meadow doesn't care.*
